I just started noticing a metal fluttering sound that comes and goes. It went on for about fifteen minutes while I was driving today. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side heat vent. It was happening all the time but mostly Only when Moving, and I noticed it didn't matter if taken out of gear or in gear, the noise was just constant. Any ideas? Thanks. 2006 STI TBE CAI GSbcs
Possibly a loose wastegate arm causing the wastegate to rattle in its seat. See if you can hear a similar sound when moving the arm, or even if it seems to move much at all it could probably be tightened.
It has a rubber washer between where it's tightened if that's what you mean. I was also reading up on the BCS noise, but why would it just start making that noise after 9 months without? I did notice it was a Little loose and could use tightening.
When you reused the rubber grommet did you also reuse the metal inner sleeve? I would check the bcs, uppipe/exhaust manifold for a leak, and the wastegate (for flutter). Who is your tuner? Maybe they could take a look and listen?
I tightened it and I'm going to see if that noise went away. I'll let you guys know, thanks for the help
Tuned by Nate. It sounded like some type of fan mechanism struggling and causing a metal On metal sound is what I thought, but it could have been loosely tightened BCS, I'll let you guys know asap
If it sounds like a mini helicopter coming from your turbo area and occurs loudest during mid/partial boost (0-5 PSI) it's wastegate flutter or the BCS clicking. BCS clicking can be mitigated by a grommet between the BCS and mount point, WG flutter is perfectly normal nothing to worry about.
