It was a TSD road rally so there weren't really any good shot oppotunities. The only real photo opportunity was a section when Carl was linking corners:yumyum: maybe next time we'll bring the camera along
how do these teratrips work? are they GPS based? or are the true distances broadcast from each corner as you go past it. its really cool how it can be adjusted for tire size, to be even more precise! must be a blast!!
they're either driven by a magnetic sensor mounted to some part of the driveline, or the vehicle VSS signal. In the case of a modern Subaru, you're not going to get a signal much more accurate than the VSS anyhow. Essentially they're a combination clock and pulse counter. Simple conceptually, but it's actually kinda tricky to make it all work together in a nice package you can use while flying sideways through the woods at 6-70mph I have two rally odos, one is an Alfa Club (http://www.rally.cc/), which will measue to 1/100 mile, and can track time in your typical seconds, or in 1/100 of a minute (seems odd, but makes math a lot easier). It's a farily basic unit. Most GPS units aren't capable of enough detail to use as a reliable odometer in a rally situation. the 5Hz or faster models may give enough resolution, but they're rare and more expensive. Also, GPS reception in dense forest or in valleys is hit or miss at best, and you wouldn't catch me trusting my life to them at speed.
yea our 303+ reads off the oem vss. it needs a black box to convert the signal to something the terratrip understands.
To drive my Alfa Pro I got a thing that converts the AC voltage that comes off the ABS sensor and coverts it to a pulse. Mostly cause I couldn't get the speed sensor off the cruise control to work accuraetly and the speedo is cable driven in such an old car. Now I have four wheels to choose to take a pulse off of. With the Alfa, don't know about Terrortrip, its got an A and B factor to choose from so I can use A for snow tires and B for rally tires so I don't have to reset that factor when I just use these two tire sizes. Most MN rallies are off the same odo, Mark Larson's I believe, so I don't have to worry about changing unless I go out of state. The clocks we usually set to an atomic clock, availabe at each rally but I also carry a travel one (good also to have a big one at service to know when you're due out of service), that way you know your on the rally time schedule.
yeah the terratrip also holds two different cal factors. I need to rewire it so it's on a constant 12V source. lol we lost our official time when I turned the car off - was almost a disaster lol
Good point, I have the odo and the ham radio hard wired seperately (and fused) directly to the battery in both the Legacy and the wagon.
still dirty from the road rally I'm kind of rough on mudflaps picked up some more rally wheels and tires! exedy stage 2, fenderliner, t-belt, engine gasket kit waiting for a big install in the next few weeks (once the custom Wisecos arrive)
Man, those wheels get passed around more than (insert derogatory promiscuous reference here). I think they've been on at least 6 cars.

Interesting that the pistons didn't come with coated skirts, since all their off-the-shelf pistons seem to have it.
coating was an option. we opted against it due to the fact that the engine is so mild and will only be run for several hundred miles before being rebuilt for next year
Fair enough. How much was that fire extinguisher? I'd like to get a man-sized one for my car as opposed to the weeny 2.5lb units.
Carl, When I'm healthy again, I'm going to make some more flaps. If you break one of mine, I'll be impressed... I hope to be in the garage if not by this weekend, next week for sure.
I already have new material sitting in my room. these ones are the material sold by rally-lights. I will be mounting them outside the fenders with L brackets instead of in the fenders. I'm also making some underbody flaps to try and keep some dirt out of the rear wheels
I have the truck mudflaps you use for yours sitting in my garage as well - I'll be using that for a gas tank shield. That stuff wouldn't break, it would rip my bumper/fender off instead lol (why I stick with flaps that sit on the rubber side of the polymer family instead of the plastic side)
sorry, didn't see that post lol the onboard system we are using (comes with 2 mechanical actuators and 6 nozzles) is from pegasus racing and cost $300 (4L and cheaper than other systems because it uses a steel tank instead of aluminum). We also have a handheld extinguisher on board
I have one of the cheap 2.5 lb BC extinguishers, but it was cheap and I don't think it is the most reliable. The instructions express that over 150 degrees is bad for it, which is easy to surpass in the summer heat. I'm just looking for a decent handheld unit that won't break the bank.
yea that one is a fixed mount system. pull the release and foam everywhere lol edit, you could technically use it as a handheld. 4L is a bit unwieldy but a good capacity
I've read conflicting information about what type to buy. Some say dry chemical extinguishers corrode parts. The CO2 ones sound good but are about twice the price, and then there is the Halotron or whatever.
Make sure you take your extinguishers out after the rally and let them sit in a way other than how they are mounted in your car. Shake them up every once in a while as well. If they sit too long in the same way, the junk inside doesn't work after a while.

Yes, they do. Badly. I have a set of allen keys with all the black oxide stripped off from a drychem extinguisher. Nasty stuff. Halotron is a good multipurpose auto handheld, but the foaming stuff carl has is better.
