We ran into a snafu while doing my springs. One of my struts the bolt that holds the strut to the knuckle is seized. We cut the nut off, but we rounded over the bolt so it wont move. Cant really get a hammer onto it because it's the bottom one in the back. Any ideas on how to get it out.
It might be easiest to take the whole knuckle out with the strut attached and then you can get room to drive the bolt out. Just taking the axle out might give you enough room too.
It's not too hard, usually... There's a large nut holding the axle on (32mm I think). That nut has a lock collar on it that you have to straighten in one spot. Otherwise you just need a good impact or a good breaker bar and you should be able to get it loose. You might have to put a wheel back on and lower the car to keep the hub from turning. You can take the center cap out of the wheel to access the nut. Then, the axle is on splines in the hub, it should slide out, but you might have to drive it to get it started. Just don't hammer on it directly too much and mushroom it out.
Well you can always drill it out. It will take forever and will suck to an extreme but sometimes it is the only way to get some bolts out.
we tried drilling but it's in a horrible place and not quick the easiest bolts to drill out. Probably is the best option though Matt >.>
yeah, taking off the hub assembly might be the easiest, but it will take some time. Otherwise I'd find a 1/2" socket that's closest to what head (bolt head) you have left. Torch the bolt head until is blazin red and hammer the socket on to the bolt. Then immediately hit it with a breaker bar.
Think i'm going to go see if sears has a damaged bolt remover that's large enough. Youre suppose to be able to easily slide the bolt in and out correct. If so I'll get a file too.
supposed to = yes. Do they ever = rarley. especially if they've been in for a few years without being removed. Then those bolts can be tough to get out
