so the forester is auto and when driving it feels fine ride fine. but when it shifts 2nd or 3rd it sounds like a grinding but you dont feel it and rpms dont change or anything. is it the trans or somthing else? it sounds kinda grinding or crushing a plastic bottle. what could it be? also the car only has 84,xxx original miles

It's annoying, yes, but you shouldn't need to worry about something snapping. So far to my knowledge, no one has had a failed 4EAT as a direct result of this. You'll be fine.
