Went up to Ely for the weekend. On the way back today, the engine started some CRAZY knocking and then FAIL. We towed it to the nearest dealer (WhiteBearLake). We should find out what the scoop is in the next few days. It sounds like this has been an issue with the 08/09 turbo models. There are a few write ups on www.subaruforester.org. Ugh!!!
Yeah...I know. We were going 75 on cruise. We weren't doing anything to cause issues. Kind of disappointed! From what I've read they're putting new motors in. I guess we'll see how it plays out.
Do you recall what was done to fix the issue? Were those cars under warranty? We have 22K and bone stock. Hoping we don't have to pay anything...
A number of 08 and some early build 09 wrxs had issues with spun bearings. There is a big thread on nasioc (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1695936). Most seemed to have happened at < 10,000 miles though.
So I got the word that there is definitely something wrong within the block...(I knew this...) : ) They are waiting to hear from SOA as to whether or not they should tear into the engine or "do something else". I'm hoping they do something else, like take out the old and put in a complete new. My fingers are crossed. The waiting game is definitely a challenge, mentally. Based on the last 6 of the VIN number I think it falls under the stop sale they had a while back (Forester Wagon VIN701045 or later 2008/01/08 or later). Made 6/08 and 7094XX. They said they had 9 cars towed in over the weekend. All loaners are gone. Hopefully we can pick one of those up soon. Hmmm...more to come.
So, the tear down begins. I need to front the 4 bills for the work and find the receipts to prove that I did an oil change between the time I bought the car and now (approx 3 mo.) - oil, filter, etc. I am thinking I have all that information sitting in a reciept pile somewhere. Once the oil pan gets dropped then they'll submit some photos of the crank to SOA. I have a feeling this is going to take awhile - 3 to 4 weeks. Hopefully not much longer than that. Loaner car is still in the works.
Thats BS! When my bearing failed it was ALL covered under warranty. No reason you need to front $400 bucks for something that should be covered under warranty!
Hey...I'm trying to keep a level head about it. At this point it sounds like all is going good. Maybe if I don't focus too much on what could/might happen it won't. Who knows... I found those d@mn receipts and submitted them. We'll see what they come back with. Think I could pay a little extra for an upgrade to an STI full assembly? : ) YUM!!! : )
I tried that. It was a no-go. But it sounds like they are handling your situation a bit different than they handled mine. FWIW this is the thread that was started because of the recall/blown motors on WRX's. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1648372 and http://www.3gwrx.com/forum/index.php?topic=3811.0
Yeah, this is totally different than what Ive dealt with. Basicly the new engine comes completely assembled, with turbo, and even wiring harness, in a crate, directly from subaru to the SERVICE department. Subaru wants back exactly what they sent you.
This is true, still under warranty. Unless they are gonna reinburse you back or give it back when the warranty is paid from SOA.
UPDATE: Fully covered! New long block on it's way. Should be here by Friday. Should have the vehicle back by mid next week. As one of my friends say, "put your @$$ in the puddin'!". : )
foresters too ay? I bought my car with the new motor they put in to replace one that fai;led within about 300mi!
Atleast you got a loner. I didnt. The dealership down here doesnt do loaners, they do rentals. I wasnt 21 at the time, so they wouldnt pony up with the loaner. BS! Bob
If a one year old car needs a fresh engine installed, they should provide you with a chauffeur in addition to wheels.
It's ready!!! It's taken a little less than a month. 100% covered. The communication with Keng at Whitebear has been superb. He has been up front about everything and kept an eye out on a loaner car for us. I can't wait to pick it up. What's the process for breaking in a new motor? Everyone probably has their own way...but do you have any suggestions?
Honestly, after mine blew up, i hardly babied it. Runs like a champ now. I dont guarantee this works at all, but thats just what I did. Everyone has their opinions on this, Im sure the regulars will chime in.
I would just stay out of boost for at least 500 miles. Everyone does everything different, on all my motorcycles I just rode it how I would ride it, not too hard, not too soft, dont hold it at any constant rpm, dont let it idle for long periods of time, vary RPMs.
Hahahaha...I bought it used (17K) from a dealership in Utah. I don't know how it broken in. Obviously not the right way. : )
