I picked up the 2.5RS from RichWRX today. I think I got a decent deal, but there's a lot of work to be done before I get it to where I want it. I took it out tonight to bed in the new rotors Rich threw on today. I noticed that under hard right turns I get a dragging or scraping sound. I initiated the same turns with the brakes dragging to make sure it wasn't just the pads vibrating against the rotors and the sound was still there. Thoughts? I'm suspecting the rear driver-side wheel bearing is toast.
you should check the rear brakes again, they were changed out last week. the e brake has its own pads. the front brakes are a few months old, the rotors are new, rear pads and rotors were installed a week ago, I also adjusted the e brake maybe something is dragging there?
The eBrake is really really loose. Perhaps it's loose enough to rub during a hard turn? Did you bed in the rear brakes? What pads did you use? I'm going to pull and test the valving of the entire brake system and rebuild the calipers this week too. Hopefully a brake piston-bore O-ring isn't toast and failing to retracting the caliper. Also: Where did you say a guy might have a passenger-side door? lots of questions!
I just used whatever the auto parts store gave me, all I did was change them and drive. the ebrake pad was allmost gone, maybe there just not enough pad left
You cant really bed i rear brakes unless you can adjust your bias... you will boil fluid in your fronts long before you get the rears up to temp. Check your rock guards and perhaps pull to rear rotors and make sure the shoes still have their springs but i dont think a loose handbrake would only show up under cornering. Its prolly the wheel bearing
I was really really hoping it wasn't this, but I suppose pulling, cleaning, and knuckling some grease in there isn't too hard. ...that is if it isn't completely shot. What does a wheel bearing run?
With your MNSubaru discount at Morries Mtka, it should be right around $100/side for all the parts. Labour cost will vary depending on who does it (you, the dealer, JtAG, your mate Bob who knows a bit about cars etc). Stuart.
I just went to NAPA for mine, they were only like $30 a side but i got the HTC discount, i believe they are ~$50-60 otherwise. They also have the seals for like $4. I took my knuckles off and took them to D&G Motors where Guy gave me a good deal of something like $70 to press the rears
You have to press (hydraulic press) the hubs out of the bearings, then the outer race out of the spindle. Then they need to be pressed back in. Not very hard to do if you have a press, proper sized sleeves, and you know what you are doing. But if you havent done them before i would suggest paying to have them done. If you dont install them properly (IE. press the hub in too far putting too much preload on the bearing) they can fry right away. The hub should be installed a smidge loose and then pulled in by torquing the axle nut. Here are some pictures from when i did mine if it helps at all. http://oksubaru.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=203&g2_page=4 Before you fully declare the problem as the wheel bearing i would give it a feel first. First with the car in the air grab on opposite sides of the tire, both vertical and horizontal, and give it some quick sharp shakes. If the bearing is really bad you will be able to feel it move/click. Also try pulling your axle and remove the brake drum/disc. Give it a spin by hand and see how it feels. It should feel tight to rotate but smooth.
I'm getting ready to order bearings/seals for my car too. This is what I was going to order from Napa. I've used that napa bearing part number before, it was the exact same mfg (NTN) and part number as the subaru bearing. The seals I'm not sure about, I haven't ordered them from Napa before. PGB PGRW175 Wheel Bearing - Rear Wheel $39.89 NOS 19622 Wheel Seal - Inner - Rear Wheel $7.49 NOS 19624 Wheel Seal - Inner - Rear Wheel $11.99 NOS 19623 Wheel Seal - Outer - Rear Wheel $5.99 I used a hydraulic press last time I did the bearings. But this time I'm going to try one of those hub tools. It's basically a big bolt with a lot of different size adapters that you use with an impact wrench. It worked well for taking the old bearings out.
Yeah i believe the seals are the same mfg also. I know the rear main i bought from NAPA is the same as the subaru oem one. Yeah the hub tool should work fine also as long as they arent too much of a whooooore and stuck.
I just received my order from Napa with the part numbers above. The bearings and seals are all correct, right size, etc. But this time the MFG of the bearing is different than OEM, it's not an NTN bearing. Just thought I'd post an update as an FYI for people.
