    2000-04 Legacy Front Speakers *Installed*

I've got a decent HD tuner / iPod controller head unit in my 00 Legacy, and I'd like to replace the OEM speakers. I'm confident that I can easily pick out some for the back doors, but I'm wondering what I should do for the fronts, as they're factory components.

Has anybody successfully mounted aftermarket component speaker sets? The Legacy came with the triangle tweeter mounts right by the window, (I've read the term "sail pane." Is that what it's called?) is that a usable location for aftermarket component tweets? Any suggestions?

I've been poking around on Crutchfield for fitment, and there's several options they say will fit, but I'd rather have some first hand experience before pulling the trigger.

Yes, I've got a metric crap-ton of Dynamat ready to install too. :hsugh:

There's adaptors you can buy so that you can mount a 6.5" speaker to the triangle mount.

yup. also if its anything like my car (98 leg) if you get too big of speakers mainly the magnet, they will hit the windows and stop them from rolling down. i beleive i have some adapters in my fronts and they work fine. you really just have to pull the door cards off and find out for yourself. also, i think the stock tweeters are fine. i wouldnt waste my money on expensive aftermarket tweeters that will make you sound like a ricey honda on university bumpin techno so tebled out you cant even hear yourself think. spend that money elsewhere and get yourself a good set of speakers for the rear.

Well, there are several shallow-mount options on Crutchfield, and the're VERY picky about their fitment for speakers, so I'm confident that I can easily mount woofers, and I can locate a place for some crossovers. My main concern is with the tweeters that are on the door up by the rearview mirror mounts. Can I open the factory tweeter mounts and replace them with aftermarket components?

I know Alpine 600s are great speakers and they should fit in fine.

Boosted, have you successfully mounted them in OEM placement in your model? IIRC some Subies have tweeters in the doorpanel by the opener handle, are yours sail panel or door panel?

For anybody interested, I picked up some Rockford Punch P1652-S components at Ultimate for $175 yesterday. Woofer baskets are pretty shallow, crossover is built into the woofer frame to save overall space, and the tweets test-fit extremely well in the factory sail panels.

On paper, their stats aren't phenomenal, but they sound pretty good in the store on HU-only power, so I figure it's worth a try.

More news to follow once I do the actual install.

Haven't had a chance to tear my doors apart yet.

How does the factory speaker wiring hook up to the speakers? Do they have molded plugs like GM cars do, or are they just spade connectors? I'd like to be prepared for the job when I do it and I don't want to cut factory wires.

To cap this thread off, I ended up doing the install tonight.

Ended up grabbing the nearest chunk of 5/8" pine in my garage to build brackets very similar to what this fellow did:

Had to snip away some pieces of plastic inside the door panel to clear the speakers, but they mounted solidly without interfering with the windows. The best part is, the Rockford tweeters are small enough that they mounted in the sail panel enclosures (used double-stick tape) without issue.

And for comic value, I've made an observation...

The OEM speakers, in a vehicle as new as a 2000, are garbage paper woofers with whizzer tweeters (same as below). Seriously?
