I searched around for 15 minutes and found nothing conclusive, so I figured I'd actually ask...

How big of an undertaking is stereo replacement in a 2000 Legacy? Can you do it only by removing the plastic bezel around the head unit, or do you have to branch further out into the console / dashboard plastics?

On a sidenote, do the panels pop out, or are there screws I haven't located yet?

Thanks in advance for any help!

You might need to take part of the consol, but the trim bezel around the radio will give you acess to the support brackets. A really short, stubby phillips head screwdriver is key for hte bottom of the bezel.

Yeah really easy. The trim pannels pop off and that gives access to 4-6 screws that hold the radio into place. In some cars the ashtray has to come out. Its very easy if you are mechanically inclined

easy man. start at your arm rest, work your way up to your vents. they are all overlapping. it sounds like alot but really its not. then just experiment from there. not too hard at all.

All of it pulls right off, after you get the two hidden screws out of the bottom of the ash tray. Also, welcome fellow MNSBR member.

Cool, thanks for the quick feedback everyone! I'll be crimping the harness for this thing during my last hour or so of work, so I'll be ready to work on it tonight.

And thanks for the welcome, subytek! Quite a bit different than MNSBR, nobody's insulted me yet or started an argument about mobile audio brands. :p

I got my harness ready while I was "working" as well when I did my install a month ago. I wasn't more productive all day!

As a post-job follow up here, that step-by-step with photos I posted is 100% perfect spot-on. After looking at that, this job couldn't have been easier!

Sidenote, kudos to Subaru for having single DIN factory headunits. My aftermarket stereo fits like it's OEM.

The more I deal with this car, the more I love it.

They are quite easy to work on with audio stuff (except for the 05-09 Legacy/Outback and Tribeca).

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

BTW I am myzzr600 on MNSBR...
