du, i swear, i've seen ray do nothing, he doesn't even pay attention at work  just bring in a dummy dressed up, put it on your desk and ray will talk to it all day without knowing
Yes, I think that's a good idea. I won't be the only one with a cb in my car then. I've figured out a pretty good system for installing in the older imprezas. Either a Cobra 19 or Uniden 510/520 fits nicely in the ash tray with slight modification. I'd be willing to help people out with that. I also have an SWR meter for tuning antennas.
I would say walkie talkies they are a little cheeper and more people would be able to have them. Most of them work for atleast 2 miles these days so it really should be a problem. Its really nice because you know half the group is going to get stuck at a redlight somewhere.
The FRS radios can be had for super cheap these days. I bought a couple when they first came out, and they were something like $120 *each*. Nowadays, Target has 4packs for like $50. Stuart.
Yeah, they're cheap enough now. I just wish they didn't include the GMRS frequencies as well, noone's going to pay the $85 fcc license fee to use GMRS on a cheap walkie-talkie, and I'd rather have all 14 FRS channels available rather than just 8-14.
I think I'll show up, it'll be nice to have a car meet in LaCrosse again I haven't read through 100% of the thread yet, but Cty YY east of LaCrosse is a hell of a road, some of the guys here can attest of that from our meet last July. Too bad it was raining, we didn't get to push it.
I will have to look into them. I really havent used them before. We have always just had Walkie Talkies for snowboarding and such.
speaking of radios and communicating together, im not sure if this was already in the plans for the video, but i think it would look really sweet if there was a shot from an overpass above a highway and we all lined our cars up 2 wide and nose to tail... Nascar style. We'd probably need to coordinate that pretty well tho if we wanna make sure we dont have the every day drivers in between us.... but regardless there will still probably be some. jsut an idea, sorry if its a repeat.
Yeah, I brought a set up to the last ice race, they worked pretty good for communicating on the lake. Martin and I used them for the trip home and they were clear enough to talk between cars at highway speed. The range is limited, realistically probably a mile or less since they only have 1/2 watt of power and fixed antennas and you're inside of a car using them... they might not reach from the front of the pack to the back...
I think this is taken care of. I believe people are going to be scouting ahead to get the shots like this.
The range on the FRS units is very dependant on the terrain. Even a good unit that can do 7 miles in open air can easily drop down to 1/4 mile or less when trees, hills or buildings are involved. Plus, having the antenna inside the car really hurts reception (you will lose around 75% of the signal's power inside the car ~10dB signal strength drop). They're nice to have, and so cheap that it only makes sense, but don't count on being able to reach very far at all with them.
well i might have to make it to this, but it WILL be in my integra, providing it doesnt blow up when i pull it out of storage...
Maybe we could negotiate a special MNSubaru plan with Nextel and use their walkie talkie feature. And with their new group talk feature, one button could light up every phone in the convoy ! Maybe we could get them to sponsor it, and lend us phones just for the event. Yeah, it's a dumb idea. But it's late, and I'm thinking out loud. We use FRS radios at AutoX events to great effect. We might want to pick a couple of frequencies; one for general chatter, and one for a select group of wranglers to keep the rabble in check. Hmmm, what's the collective noun for a large group of Subarus ? Gaggle ? Herd ? Flock ? Sorry, mind wandered a bit there. The real downside to the FRS radios is any idiot can keep the transmit button pressed and muck it up for everybody else. We'd need to set some ground rules ahead of time so it doesn't just deteriorate into a constant drone of people asking for things to be repeated. Stuart.
I for one will not be speeding, we do not need any Five-0 pulling any of us over...Especially Groups of us
For everybody's safety I think we should have some kind of rule saying no speeding because I know for sure if one car took off someone will go after it. Don't want groups of cars getting pull over.
especially since they might start pulling us all over to give us POPO tickets - it sucks, it's not right, but it happens
i dare you to drive with your lambo doors up  yea...i'll be a granny driver that day...for a while
I wouldn't go as far as saying shunned...... Maybe just some good humor pointing and laughing....... Russ
