my sister is a graphic designer and she can make a good calendar with nice pics and other things if you guys interested. I would need a picture of the car and maybe some other things you want on it. She did one of those calendars before with my family pictures, it's pretty nice. Thanks.

I do not like cable broadband anymore. When TimeWarner was around, they had a great system. ComCast ****ed it all up.

Well it really depends on where you live. My girlfriends brother just moved out to Mayer, they have the option for cable broadband, or FIBER!! Of course he has the fiber service. He has a constant 3.5Mb connection. I was messing around with it at his place and was just amazed at the constant speed.

I have the deluxe package with Qwest, it's OK, I prefer it over comcast that's for sure.

I've also ran into people working from home that use comcast, who connect over a VPN that are getting random drops. It seems like if comcast see's a lot of traffic on an IP, they send a drop signal to the modem or something of the sort. It causes it to lose connection to the VPN, but its quick enough so you don't notice anything else drop.

That's just shady IMO, if its even true.

For the standard home user, I suppose it wouldn't really make any difference. The fact that Comcast charges what, $60.00/mnth for service is just outrageous.

This is why I like my Comcast Business Class service. They do traffic shaping on the residential service, especially on BitTorrent traffic. This is one good reason to switch on the encryption in your BT client. My brother-in-law also got a nastygram from them about downloading movies. As a business class customer, they leave you alone. I have a VPN connection between my house and my parents office in Europe, and it's been rock solid.

I'm also on my 3rd modem, but they have couriered out a replacement modem to me within 4hrs after both failures, which is about as good as one might be able to reasonably expect.

How much more is the business class through Comcast? Is your bandwith quota increased at all with the service?

It's Business Class; there is no bandwidth quota. In talking to their reps from time to time, I'm even entitled to resell the bandwidth if I so choose. I can host servers on it without fear of interference from them, and that's exactly what I do for my folks' business.

It costs $99/month for the service, and I pay an extra $20/month for a block of 8 static IPs (only 5 of which are usable for hosts, of course). If you don't need the static IPs, or you're happy using the likes of DynDNS, then you wouldn't need to stump up the extra.

That's a pretty damn good deal, I may have to look into that.
I've got a linux file server, and a small web server running at home over Qwest, its pretty slow to say the least.

I'm in the process of building my SuSE web/ftp server right now. Most of my traffic is email, and my webmail runs about as well from the outside world as it does from the inside. And my upstream speed is faster then my folks' download speed at their end, so they're the weak link in our VPN setup.

My boss has residential Comcast at home, and has a very similar email setup to me. He is very envious of how quickly my webmail kicks off compared to his. And he has a much faster server than me. Mine's not slow (Proliant ML370 G3, dual Xeon 2.8, 4GB RAM), but it's got a lot less horsepower than the AMD 64 X2 he's running.

What are you running for a firewall ? Not that it matters, I'm just curious.

I was wondering if you were using some flavour of Linux firewall. I have a pair of Watchguards (one at each end of the VPN for the sake of simplicity) but have used all sorts of stuff over the years. My favourite was the Merilus Firecard, which ran what is today the Gateway Guardian firewall, on a PCI card equipped with a Transmeta chip. It was way ahead of its time unfortunately. I think I still have it somewhere.

By the way, I have a matching pair of ML370s (email + file/print). The web server is an old Proliant 1600, and my internal switching is all on Cisco switches (yep, plural, the house is wired with Cat5). It's amazing what you can pick up for cheap if you don't mind lightly used gear that's a little bit out of date.

Congrats to the following winners. You will be featured in the 2008 MNSubaru Calendar!

    MCJT
    Blackmix
    BadbennyB
    Chux1
    Shorty1
    Bill and Readymix
    Hallywood
    Impreziv
    The Kid
    Bill1
    Ryan
    Stoooo7

As you know, you can only have on photo featured in the calendar.

If you were one of the winning entries and had multiple photos entered ONLY one photo will be selected and it will be the photo with the highest votes. There are a couple exceptions due to layout design.
