+2, for those of us missing it too it would be awesome to see how it all went from another point of view
I will be bringing 2 camera's. My DCV pro news camera and a smaller Panasonic for interior runs, if someone wants to drive me around the for a few laps. the best part is that I'll be glad to not only put the news story on MPEG but the footage as well. So I can give the group some high quality footage.
I'm sure people will be more than willing to give you a ride. I have a suction-cup camera mount that attaches to glass and will hold a smaller camera well, I used it last year to do some interior shots. If your camera has a nice wide angle lens it could make some cool interior shots where you could see the driver too. This is from last year. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8550382385999235617
So not to start something here but do we really want our special weekend exposed to everyone? Whats to say some environmentalist has a cow and our party is busted? Or you could be doing some expose' on some of our clubs not so shinning moments?
that and the snow insulates the ice so it does not freeze so when cracks happen and water comes up the weight of the snow pushes the ice down and more water up. the lake I live on is all slush except for what has been plowed.
Yeah, usually from too much snow that causes the ice to sink a bit. And there has been a lot of snow up there before the ice got thick enough. As far as the news coverage, yeah we should be careful how it's presented. It's not really a "race", more of an ice driving event, sometimes we keep track of lap times for people. The event isn't sponsored in any way by mnsubaru, mnsubaru doesn't pay for any of it nor does mnsubaru make any money from it. And at this point, mnsubaru is really just a website, we're not an official "club" yet. So, it's a bunch of people who know each other via a website forum getting together to drive on the ice and have fun for a weekend, with some people focusing on the driving part and some people focusing on the fun part. I guess since Rich is the one who organizes the event, the decision is really his.
Good points all around, if you don't want the coverage, I can still bring my camera's and my Impreza and get good footage for the group, if that's alright. I don't want to do anything to upset the group, that's not why I joined.
The reason I mention it is that Tom Liden joined a forum down here then proceeded to F them over. Maybe you can just show the better side of the event and the members. In a perfect world.
So what are the chances of someone backing out of going to the ice race? For the past few months I was 100% sure I cannot make it, but now the 0% event got realized and I'm free to go . Alternatively, are there any motels within a reasonable distance or smth?
hmm, I hadn't heard that before, sounds like there's an interesting story behind that. nvm, did some searching on tom lyden and car forum and I think I get the idea. There's a hotel on Highway 53 just north of Orr. AmerInn maybe? I think this is the one. http://www.americinn-orr.com/ There might be other places too.
we got too much snow and the ice wasnt real thick, so the weight pushes the ice down and you get slush
Thanks for link. Hm, $120 per night...pricey... Hit up some sites and this seems to be cheapest I'd rather wait if there's a cancelation, or hope for a second race.
as demonstrated in the off-road world. publicity is a dangerous thing. positive publicity can do wonders for the sport, but one image that can be cast in a negative light (notice, it doesn't have to be intentionally negative....) can completely ruin it. now, we're treading on thicker ice (no pun intended) with a situation like this than offroading, but we still have to be careful.
My spot has already been filled. Just stop filming when the sun goes down and you will be fine, lol. seriously though I think that the publicity would be fun. certain aspects would need to be worded carefully to avoid potential implications. things like calling it a race track with timing equipment might draw unwanted attention from insurance or safety people. However a maintained closed course with improvement monitoring sounds much safer and more legal lol. i think it would sweet to have a clip following someone around the track (from a camera car). it would show how fun it is and also that it is possible to have VERY high levels of car control on a slippery surface (thats right all you people who go 5mph in a 55mph zone after a snow storm this means you (if you have training and practice)).
There are 2 cheaper motels..my wife helps clean at Norman's Motel in Orr--the new owners are really nice and we'd like to promote some business to them if possible..their phone number is (218)757-3291 They are a little over $50 for 2 people and $40 something for one. There is one other motel--North Country Inn but I'm not sure on their prices.
sorry, there are no more spots open. There are 3 motels in town (10 minutes away). See my previous posts for phone numbers/prices.
yeah, i was really looking toward a weekend of awesomeness. But then realized that my buddy booked plane tickets to see an old buddy in nashville the same weekend. damn you non-refundable plane tickets.... Plus, my Legacy SS still has a tranny halfway installed and has been a nightmare for the past 2 months .
From the 1st event last year... http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14335 And from the 2nd one in March... http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15383
hey guys i bought come tires and rims from rich and was wondering if you one of you guys can bring it back with ya when you head back. i live in chaska and i seen a few members live around here. i've talked to martin but he wasnt sure if he was going to make it this year. so just in case he doesnt make it, can someone bring it back with them?
Outrageous.. I think I need to get in on this next year. Doesn't look like I'll catch much flak for driving a non-Subaru to boot.
damn, I didn't buy my 70-200 f/2.8L so we'll see what kind of shots I can get between the 17-40 f/4L and the 400 f/5.6L
thats tough. i made the same mistake the other day. had to live with that one. let me tell you, nothing beats a 70-200 f/2.8L.
well I was planning on getting the 70-200 but bought new coilovers instead. and then a bunch of other car parts. i thought I was done spending money on my car lol luckily the 400 f5.6 has really fast af so I'll just have to stand really far away and hope for good light
Does someone want to do a poll on if we should have the event filmed by subie owner/member Rangestrider and put on the local news? Make the options be: Yes, No or Doesn't Matter Thanks! It doesn't matter to me--this is northern minnesota--nobody is going to come chasing after us because of this event. Rangestrider is planning to come around 10am--everyone behaves for the most part in the morning and afternoon times.
its freaking northern minnesota..nobody gives a crap. since rich is the one that lives up there i say he makes the call of whether or not we should be worried. nobody is going to be a drunk idiot in the morning. and christ..it gets the clubs name out there, isnt that what we want??
