Actually the pistons are different. The static compression ratio of the non-STi 2.5 is higher. That's not a bad price if you have to pay some to do it.
Tranmission price good (it does include the install) The static compression ratio of the non-STi 2.5 is higher. if the compression is higher on the non sti pistions wouldn't that mean there designed for more compression and would be better suited for a larger turbo? ^ Just trying to under stand I was told there was no difference what so ever and I really prefer to have a strong crisp and reliable car. If the sti is alot better I'll sell my car and Buy one.
The 2.5L WRX pistons have a different dish size and the heads are different, so the compression is slightly higher. Otherwise, the pistons are exactly the same, and so is everything else in the shortblock. The higher compression and the difference in head sizes (06+ WRXs have some air routing tubing for cold starts) just make the cars slightly different in terms of tuning and how they run specific turbos. For the most part, this translates into slightly higher torque on the WRX engine, and slightly higher HP on the STI engine. I am speaking from knowledge of the 06-07 WRX engine, and have not done into any research as to if they have changed these parts for the 08+ WRX engine.
So Michael, when are you going to have this meet up at the jewelry store? I would definately make my way up there and would be willing to chip in on refreshments.

Great numbers Mike! Get ready for the WI runs i was telling you about. Im doing a little more work to mine to stay ahead of Wills turbo miata!
If you look at Jeff Sponaugle's post (#40) with the STi piston next to the WRX piston in that thread, you see that the WRX piston actually has more dish than the STi piston. 25.5cc's vs. 22cc's for the STi piston. This means that the EJ255 heads have smaller combustion chambers to make up for the larger piston dish and higher compression ratio. Honestly, if you are going to drop that kind of loot on an installed transmission you might want to consider a PPG box vs. a 6mt.
I cant believe nobody is gonna comment on the 07 sti tranny being available through the MNSOC discount from me for $3904. BRAND NEW. PM me if interested.
How did the tune with the 18G go, and what dyno was used? I'm thinking about upgrading my stock Legacy GT vf40 this summer, not sure if I'm going to go 18G or 20G. I autocross though so I'm leaning 18G at this point.
Oh, I'm WELL aware of that and wish that was availible THREE AND A HALF years ago when I spend that much on my 8k mile '05 6mt. I mearly suggest a PPG box due to the labor equation and other factors. If doing the swap yourself, a shiny new 6mt is nice.
Hey Man! How are you doing! I'm going to send you a PM on the Novice school I signed up yesterday. I hope to see you there. MAC 2009 Novice Autocross School Hosted by Minnesota Autosports Club Event Type Autocross, Driving Schools Event Date(s) 25-Apr-2009 to 26-Apr-2009 http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31010 I'm ready for WI too.
tune Off topic but your car is done. It put up a little fight but I got it done. Michael the graph is coming up. loading right now.
A PPG box would be a built 5-speed trans. You would be able to choose Helical (less noise) gears, or the all mighty straight cut (it's a lovely noise). Andrewtech sells the gear sets, and he can also do the install. You can also just have someone else do the install for you. It would entail a complete overhaul of your trans.
For sporty driving like track use. wouldn't the 6speed allow better gear selection and keep my 20g screaming easier as the gears are shorter?:laugh::laugh::laugh: Push Pull Gears?:laugh:

NASIOC, google, among others have lots of answers. It comes down to what you want to do with the car. There are plusses and minuses to each.
Wow, that is sweet I looked up PPG they make some serious drive trains, Does anyone have experince with a dog box? Straight cut gears? I don' t like the hesitation of shifting a stock wrx trasmission the snycro take so long to line up and allow it to fully engage and dog box would be a good fix for fast hard shifts right? As far as use its still a street car, I want to autocross and track use too. and maybe a drag, maybe?
Readymix has one and Jackstands had one but never put any good power down with it, I'd suggest finding a thread on NASIOC and asking other owners about theirs. You aren't going to find every answer on MNSubaru.
Got my 09 worked on from the guys at HB speed! First off if you are in California this is the place to go! The car has Cobbs turbo back catted exhaust, and an Injen cold air intake. The pump numbers are off of 91 octane! The second set of numbers is 100 octane. Off the 91 octane 289.5 hp at 6000 rpm, 310.1 ft-lb at 3700 rpm. Off the 100 octane 310.3 hp at 5950 rpm, 332.4 ft-lb at 3300 rpm.
^Yeah I was gonna post that in another thread but I didn't see it necessary so I just PM'd you it. Keep in mind that is stock turbo stock IC ... I got twenty oh nine fever!
I think this numbers are on dynojet dyno. It would be less on RS dynomometer. 09 WRX stage2 can produce similar power as STIs stage 2. I was thinking to get vf52 turbo instad of 18G, but after doing some research went with deadbolt 18G.
I think your better of with the 18G as it will pull to 6500rpms and it is alot more fun then falling flat at 5500rpms.
Mike ive had a few different tranny gear sets in my day. And this is only my opinion but PAR has been my favorite. Dog engagement sucks if your on the street and in traffic!
Thanks Brian, I checked out http://www.par-engineering.com/products.htm they sell "compete Synchro" I belive they are designed for faster shifting with out the negative issues a dog box needing to shift fast every time you drive. Has anyone ever heard of a paddle shift conversion for the wrx? or is that going to be way to expensive? Ron sent me a PM from R S Motors, Lee was going to send me the chart but a emergency came up and he had to take the week off. I'm sure the results will be up soon.
Sorry. As soon as I get back that's the first thing I'll do. I've had it printed out for a while. But keep forgetting to post it. I'm at the hospital with the wife. False alarm with the wife again today. I've been in and out the whole week so far. I'll do it first thing in the morning. Before you post another where is my dyno ?????????????????? And WTF????????????????????? I thought I'd let you know that I won't be able to post it until Monday. I'm out of the shop until then. Just had a tiny baby boy a month earlier than expected. I didn't wanna bump this thread just for this so hopefully you catch it
went for a ride today... 60 to 100 in a blink.. hella fun, ohh andthe donuts in 2nd at near idle were fun too
not really just anxious to see it!!!!!!!!!! Hey mike ^ I've gotten better at the donuts John P from school has a 03' bug eye I went to his house in Cardnal hills in Monticello and threw done some wild donuts on the skinny side streets in front of his house while Johns mom watched from the window :laugh: Thank you Ron I cant wait to see the Chart, Congradulations on the baby Boy! How tiny and how much did he weigh? name? etc?
Here you go. The numbers you got posted were the peak numbers while I was tuning. This is the final number when you came by and watched some of the pulls while testing different filter.
