I've never heard of the M14 being recommissioned..in any quantity...but if they have, more power to whoever wants to use it. I can see a good shoulder fired 7.62 coming about in the next few years, but I'm sure I wont be active duty long enough to see it go into wide scale use.

I think the biggest issue with the 5.56 round is that at short distance, 25m or less, it can "shatter" on impact. Its too much kinetic energy behind that little round, and not enough mass for it to want to stay together, especially with the steel tipped ball rounds. I guess that would be the biggest beef with it at this point.

From SPECS that I have read in my field manual, the M14's effective range is shorter by 340 meters. Keep in mind the manuals have a lot of info, and typo's are always in there at some level. Can you look into that? now I'm curious!

I just checked about 10 different weapons websites, and everyone came back with 460 being the max effective range. Now on towards finding out why...

Interesting I will inquire amongst some people who know the 7.62x51 round better than me.

    Edit: I did some searching.

What I have found is that the M14 and the M21/M25 rifles have different effective ranges. The M14 is 460m as you said, but the M21/M25 go out to 900m. These rifles are fairly similar the main difference would most likely be that the M21 and M25 have some sort of optics. I have also found that the range is dependent on ammunition. The M14s 460m range is listed with using M80, and the M21/M25s range is listed using M118/M118LR/M118 Special. I believe that the M118 is a match grade bullet, allowing for greater accuracy but I am not sure.

These websites show information about ballistics for 7.62 and 5.56 NATO rounds.

    http://www.snipercentral.com/223.htm

The information on these sites leads me to believe that the 7.62x51 would be a much more effective round at longer distances due to more energy and a flatter trajectory (bullet drop). I have inquired on a forum for further clarification on this topic though. I will report what I find.

This is getting kind of OT, lets take it to PMs.

    haha, sounds good martin.

Anyways, sent my dad an email about the dates I'll be back. Now I'm just waiting on him to find out when a good day to poke holes in targets will be.

hey everybody, just wondering what days might work for a shoot!

I'm looking forward to doing this.

Anybody in the club have an AR15/m4 or anything that we can shoot with?

    haha, good advice.

We qualify with the M9, starting 25meters out. Then we shoot at 15m, 10m, and 7m. So really the closest I've ever shot on target with a 6" kill zone was from 21feet? Hmm... that would explain why all the civilian cops that shoot on our ranges cant hit anything.

^ I went with the xd 4" Compact it hold 15 rounds. The new XD-M hold 19 of course plus one on each with a chambered round, I looked at the XD but it bigger then I wanted for conceal reason, and 15 rounds Is all I need, :ugh: I hope? But yeah a solid gun I really like it.
