so, so far i has: transmission flywheel clutch peddle assembly shift linkage clutch cable clutch I know i need a new rear diff and drive shaft.... Do i need anything else? Also, dose anyone know where i can find DIY step by step walk through? ^bin looking for one and is having problems finding.... thanks
do you have the proper parts to secure the clutch cable? it should be a bracket that the cable locks in to on the motor. good luck with the swap.
Someone may want to chime in here, but I *think* the tranny crossmember might be different. Have you looked at Chesney's? They always had a ton of Subaru stuff.
^calvary's actually has a 98-01 OBS 5spd, we plan on getting most the other parts we need from, I'm just not sure what else we need.
Does the rear diff match the tranny? That's kind of a big deal. Wiring is fine. Flip two wires on the ECU to tell it you've got a manual. At least its like that old Legacys. Ryan should know about the swap as he's done it in an older impreza.
you NEED a 5 speed crossmember, also make sure your car is in park with your battery out before you pull the trans, otherwise you will have to jump the solenoid in your shift lock box in order to get your key out. I have done this swap 2 times now and my key got stuck, yet bryans did not. :dunno: one wire on one of the transmission plugs has to be jumped, I can take a pic of the wire you have to jump. its easy but sometimes a pain finding the exact spot to jump. as I said, give me a call when you plan on doing this and ill head up there, I need to pick up springz from Fundoonz. the only other thing I can think of is replacing your gauge cluster, I kept mine the original just so I can tell people I switched it and when they dont believe me I just show them the cluster. you will find that getting the auto trans out will be the hardest. call minnetonka morries with the number on the bellhousing where the starter goes and figure what the final drive is on the trans, when I called they said it was a 3.90 but I would make sure. also make sure you have a 3.90 rear diff.
I was hoping the tranny was 4.11, cause then she could use the non-LSD diff from my car...but I still have to look into that. Also, what's the best way to figure out what rear diff a 2.2 96' OBS has?
Crawl under the car with a rag and wipe off the diff cover. it will tell you what the ratio is. 3.9000 is my guess.
it's 3.9. I'll be doing this to readymixes impreza in the next couple weeks, I'll take lots of pics for you to see.
thanks, we needs all the help we can get btw getting the drive shaft out of the obs at calvarys was a bitch! it took us almost 4 hrs and we also only got half of the cross member out too:ugh:
IF you need an Open Rear 3.9 Diff I have one sitting in my garage. Name your price. I just want it out.
Wait wait wait, I think he meant that the auto rear diff is a 3.90. The only manual 3.90 cars besides the STi was the Legacy SS.
um no, not according to this... cant say this is correct but it is what it is. http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/lsd/lsd.html edit*** found even more places saying that all 93+ 2.2s 5spds were 3.9s
Well, I guess I'm not as up on the old impreza stuff. Half of this discussion could have been avoided by looking under the car...
Good thread! I will be doing this swap here sometime this summer. My 1995 Auto is a 4.11 FD. Autos normally get one step better gearing over the 5spds (3.90 vs. 4.11, 4.11 vs. 4.44) Most Impreza L 5spds are 3.90, Legacys could be 4.11 (my parts car is), RS 5psd were 4.11 IIRC, and RS 4EATs were 4.444. Perhaps the best place to find the FD of a car is in the owners manual under the specs section. If you have access to the book it can save you some time. You will want to make sure and keep those 4 little bolts from the driveshaft, they are special and not easy to find else where. while you are doing the swap you might consider doing the throw out bearing and pilot bearing. I found this place: http://www.clutchcityonline.com/products/15-010.shtml that has the whole kit for 165 shipped.
oh noes:emo: This is what we are going to do... i feel like we are going in circles with this rear diff issue... i shoulda just bought a manual in the first place.......i is an idiot:ugh:
