so today was the first day i really got to drive my car (95 2.2l awd auto impreza)
the issue, when i mash the gas it pulls like it should up to about 4000 rpms, then it nails what feels like a rev limiter. The car surges up a few rpms, then down, and the cel came on almost instantly (stays illuminated not flashing) i continued to drive it, just testing the car no smoke, no smell, and as long as i didn't rev it too high it seemed completely normal.
the issue is kinda like some auto's do when its in park and you can only rev the motor to a certain rpm.
and as far as the codes, i can't seem to find my reader for the life of me, and its late and gave up my search until tom.
but until i can find the codes is there something i should be looking at?

May be a speed sensor in the transmission. I've seen an old ES do something similar to this.

how hard is it to test/find/replace that?
oh wait isn't that the plug/sensor on the top-left side of the tranny near the firewall (if your looking at the windshield)?
could this be a symptom of my speedo not working?

found the reader only code that popped up was- p0500

Symptoms of a P0500 DTC may include:
    loss of anti-lock brakes
the "anti-lock" or "brake" warning lamps on the dash may be lit
the speedometer or odometer may not work properly (or at all)
your vehicle's RPM limiter may be decreased
the shifting of an automatic transmission may become erratic
other symptoms may also be present

sounds like i found my problem...
now where do i get one?

i had the same thing happen to my 2.5 5spd leg outback. i brought it to the shop and they told me it was the cam speed sensor. only 4k rpm sux what a boring winter that was.

it was the speed sensor, thanks shibbs.
luckily the tranny i swapped in had a extra one that i pulled out and set aside and forgot about.
and it sheared the little pin off inside the tranny so i had to use a needle nose to get it out. and that solved both issues (speedo not working and rev "limiter")
