Ok so about a month ago I traded my old car for a different legacy. Its a 95 Legacy L wagon.. I changed the oil and I guess I didnt notice the rubber ring part wasnt on the filter, it stayed on the engine and then I put a new oil filter on there and tightened it up real good.. well it started to leak oil and make smoke for about a day so I brought it to my buddies house and he discovered the problem. Now, I did a proper oil change and the level is perfect... But the car starts up and then dies.. goes up to about 2k rpm and then just dies out. Do you think I need a new MAF sensor or do you think I ruined the cylinders by losing all that oil? I drove it for like one day with it smoking a little bit. I am praying that the MAF will solve my issues. Otherwise.. how much would a 95 legacy with good body condition and basically NO motor be worth? That isnt really something you can look up on KBB.. k Thanks for your comments
just pull it off, flip it over, fill it with gasoline, and let it sit overnight, go at it with a qtip if it isnt clean by the next morning. or another option is just scrubbing the crap out of it with rubbing alcohol and a qtip. you'll be up and running quicker, but the gasoline cleans it to like new quality. and you'll need a new gasket for the reinstall.
Pulling the IAC on these cars is different from your RS. Try spraying some throttle body cleaner down the large hose that connects to the intake, make sure you use ALOT. Let it sit for a little bit, try to start it, (its going to be tough initially) this might help, although a plain old failed IAC wont come back to life from a cleaning. I still say MAF.
huh, did not know that, yay for learning. that was the problem with my idling problem and now she idles like a champ, but im also MAP not MAF so i know basically nothing of the MAF sensor.
Not the MAF.. Just bought one at aces and the motor is acting the same. Starts up and craps out the motor is shot. I am selling this car pics will go up today on craigslist..
i wouldn't say it would be the motor, since if it is shot from loosing oil like you think it shouldn't start. but i'm unsure how long these cars can go with no oil, but i know i ran a civic for about 4 hours without any oil in it. then it simply wouldn't start. but it made some pretty sweet noise (sweet cuz i was swapping the motor anyways) before it actually failed, wish i still had a picture of what the piston/rod looked like after that experiment.
and what is aces? a junk yard or something? if it is i would come to the conclusion that the maf you got is not any better than the one you had. Those things suck to buy second-hand unless you know the car it came off of actually worked. i googled aces and came up with junk-yard, am i right?
Any stored CEL codes? I believe this still applies to 2nd gen pre-obdII legacys. http://legacycentral.org/library/literature/codes.htm My sisters 92 Leggy was doing very similar things for a time. Would start, rev right to 2k, start dropping to normal idle, start missing, sputter, and die. Changed the MAF, crank position, TPS with no results. Turned out to be a leaking intake manifold gasket. Somehow half of it got blown out from under the manifold. Worth a shot listening around the bay for a hissing sound from a vac leak.
Then all he needs to do is figure out the problem, the motor is definatly not shot. It has a failed IAC, I bet, is it able to be nursed with throttle to keep it running?
