I've got a 95 legacy, auto, non-turbo that developed aslight rod know and now has little to no power. I can hardly get it to move. If I feather the throttle I can gradually get it to rev as high as I'd like but the second I put it in gear it just bogs down to almost stalling. There is a odd ticking noise coming from around the throttle body area when rev'd around 1,000 rpms. Relay? Vaccum leak? Someone please help. Thanks, -Andy
Wrx! I've been thinking about it but the rust cancer has begun to take over. Just want to keep it as my daily driver and save up for a new Legacy GT Turbo
Alright, anyway. Do you have a vacuum leak somewhere? This sounds like more than a vacuum leak, tho. If it will barely run, I would say your motor is probably toast.
Ya, Up until you actually put in drive you really can't tell anything's wrong. Someone told me that if the knock sensor picks up a knock it dumps excess fuel into the engine basically flooding it out. Ever hear of that?
No it retards timing, if you have a knock its time for a new engine, How on earth did you blow up a 2.2? its *almost* impossible
I actually bought it that way for $300. It's got 226,000 miles on it. My 91's got 210,000 and runs perfectly. I bought the 95 because it has a clean shell and my 91 looks like it got hit by a train. Just trying to figure out if the 95 has any more life left in it but doesn't dound that way
I'm thinking it's time to take whats left of the 91 and junk the rest. Six years of driving a car that looks like it came out of a demo derby is enough for me
Hahaha Put it IN a demo derby!! That's a blast. BTW - does it feel like the transmission is what is dragging down the engine? Could it be your trans is shot?
haha. If the drivetrain wasn't so solid i would have years ago. The trans seems fine. The motor seems to be getting either too much fuel or not enough. I can hold the pedal to the floor and it wont rev at all in gear.
it wont rev quickly, I have to feather teh throttle for awhile then it revs up and down fine. reverse and drive have the same repsonse. Little to no power
boy, this is very strange. burning oil? coolant? if it really is knock, then it's probably shot. although I would suspect blown rings or piston or something, in which case it would be billowing blue smoke while that oil burned off (unless it's out of oil.....:eek3: ). a substantial post-MAF intake leak would cause little to no throttle response, but not quite how you describe. I'm kinda stumped. seems to me if it was the catastrophic failure that it sounds, there'd be other signs (hole in the block, big puddle of oil, etc.). Check-Engine light?!
check engine light comes and goes. and i'm assuming it if is catastrophic then it wouldn't run so good at an idle. I noticed a really crusty gasket in between my throttle body and intake which I'm going to check out tomorrow. It does burn some oil, (can smell it) but very little is coming out of the exhaust
Knock is knock. You'd be able to hear the tick at idle. Loss of power can be many things. You'll have to dig through the possible routes of failure. Check the intake and exhaust for blockage. Maybe some small, fury animals are trying to make a home somewhere they shouldn't. Check fuel. Make sure you have pressure and that the filter isn't clogged. Spark will be pretty obvious since you would be missing, but you can check plugs and see how they look. You could do a pressure check of the cylinders to gauge what kind of shape the engine's in. Sensors can yield very power operation, so things like the MAP/MAF sensor and front O2 sensor can wreak havoc on how the engine performs. It would seem pointless to just throw away a potentially perfectly good engine.
Does anybody think that his "rod knock" might be a cat that is goin bad? that would def cause the no power situation.
Ticking is probably just some HLAs on valves that need to be bled. No power is more likely from clogged cat, esp. at that milage. Read the codes, 95 auto is OBDII so it should be simple.
My first thought was clogged intake or exhaust/ cat but I kind of ruled that out since I can get it rev as high as I want when I feather the throttle. Also, the tick isn't like a valve tick. Sounds like if I had a relay clicking nonstop right by the throttle body. I dont have a book to read the codes and it doesn't always flash codes either. Anyone know where I can get a diagram for sensors. I've ordered a repair manual online but wont see it for a least another week
FSM's are not hard to find on the web for free. Codes that are stored in the ecu would help people here diagnose the issue, and you don't have to have a book for those, just post them here or google. So go to autozone, rent their code reader and scan the codes.
