I'd start with bushings, front and rear. Kartboy ones.

dont mean to highjack but this thread seems pretty much over, will bushings make shifting smoother? my third gear is kinda messed up sometimes if i shift fast and i know the sink-roes help with it poping out of gear but do they help smoother shifting too? fyi my car doesnt pop out of gear its just a hard shift into 3rd sometimes

You might benefit from fresh tranny fluid. Does Uncle Scotty's play nice in Legacy trannies ? I would think so since it's a 5MT.

Yes. Yes it does. USC Fixed a lot of niggling issues in my tranny.

Bushings will eliminate the slop, and make shifts shorter. Smoothness - probably not.
Hard shifts - like it goes in slowly or does not go at all until you try again in a different spot?
If the latter - change the bushings and make sure you have a return spring down there, attached to a washer on top of front bushing.
As for different mixes - when you help your synchros, you make life harder for front diff. I just run OEM or Redline NS
