    Hi all-

Yesterday when driving my brakes stopped working. I can only push the pedal down a few cm's and the car doesn't slow down at all and a weird clunking noise is heard. I had to limp home very slowly using the handbrake to stop. This has happened two or three times over the past few years but only immediately after turning the car on and just for a second. Yesterday was the first time it has happened with the car being at operating temp and repeatedly every time I tried to stop. Any ideas as to what can cause this?

    Thanks

    There. Or here. Sometimes both.
It sounds to me like you ignored a warning sign. Very dangerous.

That said, check the system out. A hydraulic issue is probably the most likely culprit. How are the fluid levels? Have you checked for leaks? Vacuum leaks related to the brake booster?

Yes if the pedal is hard and you don't get must braking power from the pedal it could very well be a vacuum booster issue, I would check into that first
