I'm stumped as to why the a/c in my 2000 Legacy. Everything is hooked up but when i press the a/c button, it lights up but the condenser does not spin. I did put a hole through the front a/c radiator looking thing(man it's been too long i dont know what parts are called anymore LoL). I patched it up quick with jb weld and havent refilled my freon since. would no freon have an effect? i figured if worse come to worse i'll have to go back into the whole system and replace the part with the hole.
After the hole all the refridgerant would have vented out. With out that their would be no cooling of the air as the refridgerant is a major part in the whole process
we dont use Freon any more its r134a. You will have to replace the condenser have the whole system evacted and recharged PROFESSIONALLY!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT BUY THE A/C IN A CAN FROM YOUR PARTS SHOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS SNAKE OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im using caps because its very important by adding the crap to the can you have over charged the system and there are some very exact pressures in an a/c system. get it done professionally or from someone who has the evac machine. doing it with out the tools will eventually resault in compressor failure and having it done right is 10x cheaper then having to a second time!

You need to stop right here. Your over-reaction is just that, this is a TWO THOUSAND model year vehicle, the automotive industry stopped using R12 around NINETEEN HUNDRED NINETY TWO AD. And if this car is just his beater, or a daily driver, running some napa brand recharge kit isnt going to hurt a damned thing, it sounds like he needs a new condenser and a recharge, nothing more. Chill the F out.
Isnt that what I said, a new condenser and a proper recharge! AWD are you certified to handle refrigerant? I know I am certified 609 by the caa (http://www.dehs.umn.edu/training/cfcs.html) to handle all types of refer. TELL ME WHEN THE LAST TIME YOU CHARGED AN A/C SYSTEM IVE DONE 30-40 MYSELF. it is a big deal I dont want some to wreck a a/c compressor over a 100$ job or recharging. Im trying to stress the importance of having the recharge done right I have no idea if this is a beater or DD I dont care either way I want someone to do it or get it dont correctly. If you could care less what happens to his A/C dont add to the post. Sorry to anyone that this concerns I cant help when people argue about the right and wrong way of doing things.
How many times have I recharged AC systems? I've lost track, BECAUSE I WORK AT A ****ING SUBARU DEALERSHIP. I've also recharged my own vehicles, both subaru and non subaru with your "snake oil" It works just like the AC unit at my work, you only need to READ THE DIRECTIONS.
So your telling me you have no idea how an AC system functions you just hook the HP hose to the HP nipple and the LP hose to the LP nipple, got it . So my "snake oil" evacuates the all the air/refer/oil in the system then places the the whole system into a negative pressure then recharges the system with an exact amount of refer.
Everyone has their own standards. I think the AC industry freaks out about those recharge kits because at one point, they had all kinds of unregulated types of refrigerant (Snake oil?). When people with vehicles that had the recharge kits brought them into an A/C shop, the shop would evacuate and reclaim the refrigerant into their reclaim system and it would contaminate their entire 20lb or larger tank which sucks for them if they go to refill other systems or try to sell it. I think in general now it's pretty easy to know what you are getting and its not a big deal anymore.
It's not like we're recommending to replace his brake fluid with water. It's an entirely optional system, and since he's got JB Weld on the condenser, I'm guessing that 100% perfect and correct is not what he's going for. Worst case scenario: the A/C fails......which is where he's at now. I've been running the wal-mart 134a conversion kit on my Celica for more than a year now, and when I bought the car, the A/C didn't work at all.
