My 02' WRX's AC was getting pretty weak by last fall, tried it last weekend, and it didn't cool at all anymore.
Can anyone recommend a reputable shop, or point me to directions to diagnose the problem. I most likely will take it to a shop to get it done, but would like to have an idea of what's going on before I go in.

We can recharge A/C systems at Valvoline. Its $150 for the service but if you come into Minnetonka I could get you $10 off.

My '02 had an issue with the AC. Does your compressor run? Mine did not, I bought a can of the 134a at Wal-Mart with the attached hose and meter, put a little in there and it was colder than ever. If there isn't enough juice in there the system won't run. You may be just a little low. I had to repeat the same process next spring, but it worked all summer and it was a cheap fix. Instructions on the can are easy.

I do not recommend doing a/c recharges your self. You are going in blind adding 134 blind. You can not see the pressures. You don't know if the system is plugged. Best to pay to have it done. $150.00 is a fair price seeing the 134 is going up at least 50 percent in cost this year.

Is that for just a recharge, or does it also cover leak testing and diagnosis of why it doesn't work?
I thought unless you have a leak, it should work forever, or until the compressor fails.
My compressor still makes the same hiss noise when you first turn the ac or defroster on as it always has, but beyond that, I haven't looked into it.

Yeah we do a full check of the A/C system to make sure there arent any leaks. There are a couple other checks that we do to confirm that the system can hold a new charge. Everything is included in the service, if you bring it to a service station near you they should be able to check (for free  ) to see if the system is under or over psi which can tell you if theres a leak somewhere.
