Am I better off with an Accessport or having someone tune my car for me?

So, I've been reading the link from the "09 wrx vf52" thread, and it shows a pretty significant increase in hp and tq from stock with a stage 1 tune.

I am new to all this tuning business, but am I better off having someone tune my car..or should I drop the 800 bucks for an accessport?

A custom tune will always be better than a OTS map, unless your tuner is a r-tard and doesn't know what they are doing. The OTS maps leave alot of wiggle room on them since gas is different everywhere you go. Also, ever car is a bit different, so you might have one with injectors that flow a lot more gas (or less), you motor might be a bit more efficient, etc. The biggest thing is to find someone that can/will tune your car.

Yeah, what Russ said is correct. You're always going to have a more drivable car with a larger powerband with a custom tune. What MY and model car are we talking about here, and what mods?

sounds like an 09. Are they tunable with anything other than AP yet? UTEC maybe.

RomRaider/ECUFlash has been able to tune them for about a month now.
I believe UTEC works for them also.
    And of course, AP.

    Good news!
I also assume UTEC works, but not positive.

    Yeah, NinjaPlease has an 09.

I would say get a custom tune, just as others have stated. Then the tune is contoured to your car, and not "everyones" car.

Just be aware that if you make any mods after your custom tune, you will need a re-tune.

Yes, I do have an 09. I dont plan on any major mods in the near future, I was just hoping to wake the car up from the factory settings. Like I said, the thread over on NASIOC had them pushing 260/290 with a stage 1. Would it even be worth my while to tune now? or should I wait until I get exhaust and what not?

Well, if you plan on exhaust, I would just wait. First off, it is winter. Its not like all the extra power is needed now anyways. If you know you are headed to stg2, might as well wait and save the cash. No point in paying to get a stg1 tune, then 3-4 months from now pay again to go stg2.

Get that Protune from that tuner!

A good tune makes it run like stock but faster.

Not a lot of options on protuning 09 yet. I talked to RS and they can not tune new WRXs yet. DB can protune with accessport, MAP might get someone in the near future. I think you should wait and get stage 2 and maybe than there would be more places for you to tune your car.
