I prefer softer flaps. stiff flaps will tear off fenders and bumpers - but that's more relevant to stage rally, less of a problem for rallyx

RA mudflaps are not too soft to deflect rocks, the flaps aren't going to bend completly up when a average gravel road rock or rocks hit it. It's the coverage that's the issue, they don't stick out far enough to cover your wheel when it's turned and your sliding with full boost.

Also I recently replaced the RA's with some Ford truck mudflaps at fleet farm and cut off the ford logo. They stick out about an extra inch on the side and bottom.

I take comfort in the fact he wasn't even close to my fastest time of the day and the fact that one cone fell over in fear, I went by it so fast. Jake swears he never saw me touch it.

Unless Dana has started peeing radiator fluid green, she was doing more than telling stories. Sabotage!

The best thing you can do is read ahead. See where you need to go next. Typically if you do that, you'll do what you need to do in the previous section to set the car up right. It makes it so you're never overcooking corners or end up where you shouldn't be. Everything smooths out. Then it's a matter of keeping on the gas as much as possible and staying quick.

This is the best advice. Unfortunately for myself, I often get caught up in the heat of the moment and forget to do this. Always be looking two to three cones ahead of you.

maybe thats why you hit so many cones.. your car goes where your focused so if your straing down the cone right next to you chances are high youll hit it

I've noticed that my car is the most boring car to look at in picture form. It doesn't have enough power to throw roosts, and I'm almost never sideways so every pic looks like I'm standing still.

It takes a while to train (force) yourself to do this. The car will almost always follow your eyes. Look ahead, create a line, and make your car go as fast as it's willing to go on that line. The second part can be a challenge in itself unless you know the limits of the car well and understand the physics and techniques allow you to manipulate the car as needed. An unknown car, a new suspension setup, new tires, or an unfamiliar surface makes it very hard to get towards 10/10ths. Many times your stuck at 7/10ths or 8/10ths simply because it's the lesser of two evils (bad lines, hitting cones, poor car positioning/setup into a section).

I kind of wish we has some rally-x test and tune days like MAC does for auto-x. It's great fun riding along with other folks and other cars and sometimes even driving their cars. I know there's a ton of variation with car setups and driving styles and it's fun to see this in the passenger seat. It works both ways so you can also show others variations in style and technique. The MAC auto-x school with instructor ride along instructions and instructor rides with the instructors driving in their own cars, or yours, was really cool. These are things I'd love to see transition to LOL rally-x because it can be so very helpful and enlightening to many folk, not to mention a lot of fun like at the test and tune days.

By the way, the bobcat smooth out was a cool thing at this event. Although I don't know what the farmer at Cannon Falls has, it would be a neat idea to do a similar thing to help out the track conditions.

I've got about 15 years of doing this under my belt starting at 16. I grew up on gravel and bombing down back roads at retarded speeds. Even as a young pup (still young :p) I was driving junk cars way too fast and sliding them around corners, even eventually getting into the science and drifting. Being obliviously stupid at a young age with no regard for self or others tends to be a helpful time...if you live through it. Science made it sane and understandable as well as expanding techniques. I've done a lot with my car too to make it so I don't have to fight it anymore. Brake bias, spring and damper setup, camber, caster, what things I can do to make it simply go where I want it to in the first place without having to extra things to make it just move correctly. This helps a lot because it makes driving it easy and less of a constant battle. You're not fighting understeer from the spring/damper setup and from the stock front bias brakes. You get adequate grip from the tires under light and heavy steering. You steer, you brake, you gas it, and it just functions right. For example, I've had 5 different suspension setups under this car, including stock, just to understand what works, what I want from the car, and get a package that does what I need it to do (daily, auto-x, and rally-x competent). For everyone, this along will take time.

Be careful what you wish for, you may just get volunteered to do it!

Funny thing. People always say they wish we'd have a rallycross school early in the year, and then we do and they don't register. But then I hold one in a blizzard in December and we get a full house

Seriously, it's not that had to make an event work, but someone has to do it. Thankfully we've had some new people step forward in the last two years and start taking on organizational roles. So if you want it to happen, all you need to do is pick up the torch and run with it. You will get the support you need from the organization to make it happen.

If I have the free time, sign me up. It's all happy happy fun time for me.

I kind of wish I still wasn't in school and had some spare acreage to offer for a couple events. I'd be all come use my land and have fun.

I do agree there needs to be more promotion. I've seen a couple rally-x and auto-x events go by with nary a whisper from anyone on this site. For example, SCCLaC, COM, and even LoL's solo auto-x events pretty much aren't talked about here, and a non-oranization tossed together event needs a lot of promotion. For example, the first rally-x fun run event done last year I missed because I never heard about it until it was over.

I would love to help, but have no idea where to start as far as organizing and such... Although, I'm very good at taking orders and figuring out what to do if given a problem.

I had talked about trying to do a school with some people like the blizzard school. I will start to do some work to organize something. see what we can come up with.

With the under-whelming donations received for Apple Tree Dental, we unfortunately will not be able to make any donations for this rallyx. For this event alone, we didn't even break even on our costs. Normally, I would not give out numbers, but since this was such a huge let down, I want to let the facts come out. MNSOC spend close to $50 for food/water/extras, we received $24 in donations.:emo:

At this point in time, we have lost money on the last 2 rallyx lunches and we are not sure if we will be able to continue to lose money to feed everyone. The original plan was to provide food for donations. These donations were to cover our expenses and the rest of the money goes to a charity. So far we have been fortunate enough to be able to help out Apple Tree Dental, but the last couple of rallyx, we haven't even been able to cover expenses.

Sorry Carrie and everyone at Apple Tree.:emo: Maybe next time we can come up with a winning combination of help and food to help out the clients of Apple Tree.

Ouch. I guess I should have given you guys a twenty. I had a single dollar I gave and the rest twenties. I normally give five bucks, but twenty bucks for a dog and some chips is a bit spendy for me even if it's a good cause and it kind of needed to buy gas for me later on. It's crazy to think that me doing so would have equated to nearly half of the total donations. It's tough to say donate or you don't get food, but sometimes things like these sort of indicates that it may be a route you need to go. I think enough food was eaten to hint that there should have been a little higher contribution. Now there really only is around 30 or so people at these events, so the raw quantitiy of donators isn't exactly high meaning per contributor contribution needs to be a little bit. Maybe it would be useful to scale down the food contribution from $50 to something more reasonable. I know you guys leave every time with a bit of food left over. There could also be something like a pot-luck or bake sale where people can make their own food (their donation), and then sell it to other folks for predefined values (others donations). It would take a bit of organization though to create something useful though so there aren't 20 gulash dishes or 20 plates of brownies, maybe a "I want to donate" web page and a "here's what I'm bringing" page so there isn't duplication. Pricing would be simple, $1 a browny, $1 for a small cup of chili, that sort of thing. Basically those who provide donate the food, no out of pocket for you guys. Then any of the food sold is pure profit towards the choosen charity like Apple Tree or something else (if changes for each event or each season or whatever). The challenge then becomes who makes the food and if enough people will make food as well as not too many folks making food for each event. The above online webpage things can help with that.
