Wow, the race card strikes again! And thank you for posting the name and organization of the realtor. I'm going to use her because I agree with her thinking..."Can you afford this place? Or are you just wasting our time? Come back when you're pre-approved and can prove your financial standing to buy the home."

Related story, a guy I work with is trying to sell his home. He had the house pretty much sold to a family (an asian family, OMG RACISTS!) and they were all set up to buy it. Well, he packed all his stuff in boxes, setup with the storage place to house all of it, yadda yadda yadda. Then the DAY THAT THE DEAL WAS SUPPOSED TO CLOSE, the family came back as denied for credit and couldn't afford the house. Sale over, time wasted, done. He had to unpack all his office equipment so he could work the next day, and he had to start over again putting his house on the market because not only did the family that was going to buy it get declined, but all the people holding second and third spots behind that family moved on and looked at other places instead because they figured it was sold.

If that realtor had said, "yeah, sure, we'll talk about this house with you and go over the details" And then your financing fell through, she would have wasted her time on you, and wasted the time of her client. Yeah, her comment about McD's was insensitive, but at the same time, she was trying to weed out the 'tire kickers' from the serious buyers so as not to waste her time on dead end leads.

    1)Get pre-approved(as everyone has stated).

2)Go and take the class to get your real estate liscense.

    3)Profit.

5)Lighten up a bit bud. They have the right to ask the ?'s.

+1 I always like RM's posts. They certainly get right to the point.

Bottom line. They are under no obligation to trust you when you say you can afford the house. You have to prove it.

...people are so quick to take offense these days...

I bought a home when I was 21, I didn't even consider looking at houses untill I was pre approved for a certain amount, its not thier fault that you don't know the first thing about home buying.

Get approved and quit whining. Don't make me make a ej20 thread.

I used to be a loan officer and manage loan officers. As others have said, getting pre-approved is the key to having people take you seriously or not. Regardless they may be racist or not. Either way, they want to sell the house and get paid.

You may not choose how you feel when someone says something you don't like. You do choose how handle your feelings and your actions from that point on.

People may take you serious because you are young. Being young doesn't make you stupid, inexperienced, or not a serious buyer. Regardless how others may view you, you are the one in control. You are the buyer and you choose whether you throw down an offer or not. You choose if you want to use a realtor to help buy or not. The sellers and realtors all need you. Get your pre-approval and show your confidence in yourself and your pre-approval in every viewing and conversation you have. DO NOT be influenced by realtors on your purchase. DO NOT be influenced by your loan officer. DO be influenced by those whom you trust. Family and friends who have been through the experience of purchasing a home.

My suggestion when doing a contract on a home: Put a financing contingency, inspection contingency, and appraisal contingency on there. If any of those do not turn out well, make sure you have an avenue out of the contract with out losing your earnest money.

wtf? You know, the housing market is so strong for the seller....it makes sense. They must not need your money. Screw them and find another agent. When you buy a house...go back to that agent and owner and dangle the house keys infront of their nose.

Because asians have slanty eyes like the untrustworthy characters in cartoons. They must all be evil....J/K.

Anyway, I came across this situation a few times when I was trying to buy my first and second house, people would ask if I was pre-approved I would say no, they wouldn't show up to my appointment/let me in their house. I was 20 at the time and had 1 child.

Then I found one who decided to ask how I planned to buy if I wasn't approved. I said: "with a check". She showed me the house, I bought the house, she made her ridiculous commission for no work. She also sold me my second house and is currently working out the details of the house I'm currently trying for without it going to market.

Moral: That realator was not worth your time. You/Seller end up paying the realators wage. You shouldn't have to settle on a ****bag. Anyone worth working with will treat you much better and end up helping you (As well as themselves) in the long run.

Note: If you plan on taking out a mortgage, you really should be pre-approved before you start looking for a home. There's no point in tourin houses you can't/don't know if you can afford.
