I just bought my 2002 wrx and the clutch is going. I've NEVER had to do a clutch on any car I've owned before so I don't have a clue on what all needs to be done. My last car went 115k on the stock clutch, then I sold it.

#1 What clutch to get? (This is a daily driver, mild power mods)

#2 Who does the work? (Where do I get this installed, what price/cost am I looking at?)

    Thanks for any help.
boy this car is a money hog :), but I love it!

Stock clutch is an Exedy Stage1 and it should be just fine for your needs. You can find them cheap online at a few places. Maybe ask some of our vendors about their prices. As for replacement, maybe talk to Mike Wray aka LegacyPGT on here. Or anyone from Morries Minnetonka that is on here.

He's saying that he has no idea what he's talking about, but he has a story about a clutch that is vaguely relevant. The Exedy Stage1 full face clutch is the OEM replacement part for the Subaru WRX.

Exedy makes the stock replacement AND a "stage 1 organic", which is supposed to hold a little bit more power.

would anyone upgrade to an ACT street clutch? Why go with the stocker when you can upgrade slightly?

Clutches are cheaper than transmissions so you would be best off having that be the weak point rather than the trans. Assuming its a stock trans and your that hard on it. Stock clutch is also an easy dd clutch for traffic and what have you.

The stock 5-speed can take a lot of power, but not a lot of powerful launches. All about how you drive it.

I would recommend on getting a stock clutch. The Subaru's 5 speeds are weak, and with getting a heavier clutch, you will increase the risk of launching your trans.

If you would like an estimate, just send me a PM. I would be able to get you in and out in a very short time.

What is the "tq rating" for the stock clutch?

    On NASIOC...a vendor:

    Exedy OEM Replacement Clutch Kit

For 02-05 WRX -- $225 shipped (other vendors have this close to $200 shipped)

Exedy Stage 1 Organic Clutch Kit

For 02-05 WRX -- $549 shipped (other vendors have this at $450ish)

Holy price difference batman! I could get 2 stock clutches installed for the price of the "stage 1".

The Exedy stage 1 and Exedy stock (OEM) are the same clutch disc, but the pressure plates are different. The Pressure plates are what do most of the "holding" or "clamping" power of the clutch system, along with the surface area of the disc itself.

For anything under ~315whp on a stock 5 speed, a stock clutch should be fine.
