06 wrx 113,000miles... Had my body guy installing a hitch for me last weekend when I was at my parents' in Chippewa Falls (I live in Elk River). On the way to drop it off with my dad he thinks the transmission blew on him He said it sounded awful (like it fell on the ground) when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. He got it back to the shop (Menomonie) and they removed the transmission but he's a body guy so they don't want to touch it, nor do I want them to... I was thinking I would go pick it up and than bring it to a transmission shop or something to find out what's going on - busted gear(s)? blown transmission? rebuildable? Recommended shops? Serious help needed - thanks in advance
We'd need to know more about the symptoms for any type of diagnosis. Did it shift into all gears? Did it grind into any specific ones? Did it sound like a can of marbles? Was there a specific gear that would not apply power, even though it was engaged? Etc...
If it was driven far after it shred the teeth of the gear, it will be close to junk. Those shredded gear teeth would have ran through the rest of the trans gears and ruin all of them. I try to tell people to shut down right away when something goes wrong. That's the only way to save them.
Spoke to him just now... He said he had just shifted from 2nd to 3rd and than heard a loud bang "sounded like the tranny hit the ground", pulled over, and shut it down. He said he heard a couple clunks but not quite like a can of marbles. He said he was able to shift it into all of the gears when the car was pulled over afterwards. Since he pulled it over right away he's not sure what, if any gear would not apply power. After pulling it over he got the flatbed truck at his shop, picked up the car, and brought it back to the shop where it now sits with the tranny taken out ready to be looked at from someone....Ideas? Trying to figure out if I should have my old man bring it to a reputable tranny shop near the car back in WI or if I should pick it up and bring it back here to MN for someone/someplace local to check out. Praying it is a gear(s) and/or rebuildable but expecting the worse and than would be on the hunt for an appropriate transmission within reasonable budget.
Well if your'e already that far, then the only thing left to do is open it up and find out what's wrong. No point speculating.
I just thought I'd ask and see if anyone had any ideas or knew of anyone in particular that would be a good person/place to take the transmission to. I don't know of any Subary familiar transmission people in the area.
Receptionist told me that they are only making appointments with existing customers at this time because they are so busy.
