a torch with a non cutting type flame, slow even application of heat, and some kind of a metal polish.

What 3ric said. And if you screw it up, you can sand it off and try again.

a propane torch may not get it hot enough, but then again, it just might be the perfect amount of heat.

Don't get it too hot, once the color has pushed past the temper color you are desiring, you have to bring it back all the way up to working temp and cool it off again (read: orange heat). Use a MAPP gas or propane torch with slow, gradual, even heating of the metal. Give it a few passes with the torch and take it away, rinse and repeat until you see ANY color start to show. Once the color you are looking for is showing QUENCH IT IMMEDIATELY! If you let the colors draw in any further you can overshoot. You can always work your way up the color chart (in terms of getting hotter) but once you go past a color temp, you can't go back down without a full reheat/cool cycle.

Would running an extra injector in the muffler and dumping alot of fuel thru the system get the same results?

Not that he'll be able to know what temperature the material is at when he does it, but just want to point out that this scale is for essentially mild steel. Varieties of stainless will be much different in their reactions to temperature.

    Good advice none the less.
