So I was in the process of taking a look at my brakes until a severe thunderstorm rolled in, so instead I thought I would post a quick question about this. Car: 2002 Subaru RS Mileage: 115,000 Cause for concern: After driving home from work (5 miles or so) I get a horrible squeal/screech from my passenger side rear wheel. Only happens when I am just about home puling into my garage, not at all before then. It is not constant for my whole drive, only (it seems) after I have been driving for a few miles. Last week when I first noticed I had driven maybe 30 miles, and the rim was warm. Other notes of importance: The pads and rotors were replaced 4000 miles or so on the back wheels, last fall if I remember correctly. Any ideas why the noise would come after some driving? Anything specific I should look for with the brakes past pad wear and a stuck caliper? Could it be deterioration of the soft brake line (only reason I ask is a friend just went through this causing a caliper to seize)? Parking brake not disengaging? Something else? Your input/experience is appreciated. Thanks for your help, hopefully this storm passes soon and I can get back out to look at it on my only day off this week...
Check the brakes and rotors for normal operation, to me it sounds like it may be something else. Wheel bearing perhaps?
Update: Took the wheel off, and the rotor is not spinning freely, it takes both hands and a lot of effort to spin it, but it will spin.
