Argh! Now, I'm going to have an income, so I can justify the cost of the tires, but then again I might pick up a new vehicle, so then it would be ridiculous to put these on an old beater and sell it, and I still gotta shell out the $$$ for my wife's new tires, and, and, and . . . My head is going to assplode.
Update: So I just talked to Luke@tirerack. They're getting a whole load of 225/45/17s in later (though I'm only get two 2@$75>2@$104/ea). So call them and get on the list. Maybe other sizes too
With good tires like this, don't try to cheap out on the mounting. Take 'em to Jeff (The Alignment Guy) and he'll do you a fair deal. But don't bother trying to get him to match Sam's Club, he'll tell you to take 'em there if you're being that cheap.
I e-mailed Luke@The Tire Rack about my order. He quickly shot me an e-mail back. I am changing your order to the Indiana warehouse as we are getting more in on 3-6-09 there Many thanks to him and the team over at The Tire Rack!
I received a e-mail maybe 45 minutes after I placed my order saying they are shipping mine out the door today. I will have them Thursday. Guess it helps to have a oldball size. So we have 6-7 people order tires from here?? Russ
Mine have been "released to shipping" and so should ship today. I ordered the slowest shipping, and have no idea what warehouse they're coming from, so we'll see when i get them. As long as I have them by April, I really don't care. I'm also having them drop shipped to Jeff's shop and when I know the shipping date, I'll drop off the wheels they're going on.
Yeah, Jeff The Alignment Guy is great. If you have nice wheels or like yours to be in the same condition after mounting as when you brought them in pay the little extra over discount tire/sams club and take them to Jeff.
When I get my $$$ this friday, I'll get a set. and if someone buys my Cobb AP2, i'll have some more funds. maybe buy 2 sets!!! muahaha
I thought his price was already below theirs. If so, I'm quite sure he'll match their price if you insist But I'm out of the loop these days, so I may be wrong. So why am I even bothering to post this ? Good question. Just bored I guess. And lonely Stuart.
Jeff's been telling me how he gets kids who show up and say they can get tires mounted at Sam's for (insert ridiculously cheap number here) and insist that he should beat that price. Ignoring that Sam's requires you to be a member, and expects that you purchased the tires there in the first place (and depending on who you get may or may not actually be willing to mount the tires, and may or may not do it cheaply). Anyhow, Jeff will be significantly better pricewise than taking the tires to a Tires Plus or any other auto chain, and will come in less than most small shops too. It will depend on what yu need. If you need to come in, have him take off the wheels, dismount, mount new tires, balance and reinstall the wheels, then it's going to cost you more than if you drop off a nice clean set of rims and tires and don't need them done for a few days (so he can take care of them during down time between appointments). Oh, and Stoooo, you picked the right (or wrong) winter to move away. Regarding the discussion about potholes (involving a certain person banned from here), the really deep freezes this winter have absolutely destroyed the roads in Minneapolis, the potholes are car eaters. In all honesty, right now I swear a run to ther grocery store is harder on my suspension than the gravel rally stages I've run. Wrong because we've had plenty of good snow to drive in too (6" more forecast tomorrow)
Hmmm .... I need summer tires, too - but so little $$ in my budget for them... erg. And it would seem they're out of all 225 R17's (none on the website, at least). Wonder if 235's are safe on a 7" wide wheel.....
Calling Luke@Tirerack will still net you a set of 225/45R17's. They're not on the site, as they won't get them in the warehouse until 3/2, and I'll be receiving them on 3/11. 235's on a 7" wheel width is not recommended. 7.5" minimum, probably an 8" recommended.
My 205/45R16s will be at the shop tomorrow. Maybe I can put them on the car and try to drive in the 6" of snow we're supposed to get...
what size for sure could i run with my car(01 RS), stock 6 spokes. i know stock size is 205/55-16 but can i change them up? dont know about tires much could i use the 225/50-16 without rubbing?(cheaper )
this is a link all car people should have: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html You put in your stock size and then the tire you want to compare it to. In this case, you'll find that the difference is only 0.1% in overall circumference, so it'll probably be a good fit. Then you need to look at the tire specs and the wheel requirements. In this case, that tire can be mounted on a 6-8" wheel. So you're likely set there. then you have to take into account that the tread wil be 20mm wider, which means that it will stick roughly 10mm further in and out than your stock tires. The RE-01R is supposed to run extra wide for it's size rating, so perhaps a little more. Look at your existing tires/wheels. If the tire is closer than about 1/2" to the strut, etc, then you might have a problem. You should also look at how close the tire gets to the rear wheel lib at full comprssion, etc. I doubt that 225 will give you any issues though. Larger might.
I was going to go with a 225. It will fit alright but it will balloon a decent amount. There is debate whether or not this degrades handling. In the end since I bought a new set I went with 205 just so I won't have to deal with any rubbing issues. I did a lot of research and from what I can tell(and looking at my own car) there is a pretty good chance that a aggressive 225 (re-01r, azenis, ect) will rub. Most likely on the strut and possibly on the fender depending. my .02 Had this deal not come up I'd be mounting a set of 225 azenis, so...
It's not so much the cold as the thaw/freeze cycles that really jack the roads up. Good site, I've found this one to give "a little" more info. http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp big +1 for Jeff. I was just there last weekend getting another set of winter tires mounted. He's gone up a little in prices but is still VERY reasonable compared to the big name shops. He's also a hell of a nice guy. Support your locals.
Have you called or contacted anyone there direct? As has been mentioned, some sizes aren't listed, but will be in stock in about a week, and you can place a phone order for them.
Yeah, it really helps with understanding offset and how different rim widths effect it. Well for me it did anyway. Good prices on these tires! I already have a brand new set of 070s sitting in the garage, do I need another set hanging around? At this price it's tempting. Maybe someone wants to swap.
Mmmm. Sexay time! :yumyum: I happened to show up with the wheels while Jeff was waiting for parts on another job, so he mounted them up right away. I said "So, we're mounting these up on the car right now, right?" He said "Sure, right after I take out a life insurance policy on you with me as the payee." He wouldn't have gotten anything out of it though, because the car wouldn't have made it a foot out of his shop today...
I received mine today also. To anyone in the Roseville area I'm going to check out Honest 1(cheesy I know) auto. He quoted me $60 to mount and balance and he seems like a really nice guy. I'll post up how gentle they are with my wheels.
Beware that, especially in low profiles these things take a lot of pressure to seat the beads. I think Jeff may have had to go to 80psi or higher on a couple of mine.
If they're properly lubricated, even our OEM runflats seat at under 50. But yes, sometimes closer to 100 is needed.
I was thinking more of the mom & pop shops that may not have experience dealing with tires like this. My tires were all nice and lubed up. Having a system that can do a large volume of air in a burst will seat the bead at a lower PSI than a smaller volume set-up will.
This is very true, faster inflation definitely helps. I think our tire machine inflates off a 300 psi line? Not 100% sure.
Got mine yesterday!! The UPS guy said "these don't look like snow tires" lol. How bad is it for these tires to be exposed to freezing temps until spring? I don't have anywhere besides the garage to store them.
I was under the impression that mine wouldn't be shipped until a week from now...but they shipped today
Do it! Should I buy the road hazard warranty? This type of thing has been good to me at discount tire, but I am not sure if it is worth it through an internet retailer :dunno:
I never get extended warranties on anything any more. It's like gambling at a casino, the odds are stacked in the house's favor. that said, Tire Rack is very reputable and will stand behind their warranty program (but it won't of course cover dismount/remount, etc).
They suck for subarus. They'll only pay for the one tire, not all 4. Also, the warranty program is not administered by tire rack, but they resell for someone else. Really, it isn't very good. Plus RE-01Rs will last one season, givcen the charge and the number of miles driven it doesn't make as much sense as something that will last 40k+ mi.
