So yesterday I was pulling off my winter wheels and broke a wheel stud on my front drivers wheel and one on my rear passengers wheel was cross threaded so i think i may need a new stud there. My question is: How hard are they to replace? Does anyone have one laying around? I called a dealer and they said no one in 100 miles have any. Thanks, Jake
call Napa or an aftermarket shop... you will have to remove the calipers and rotors... hammer out the stud.. put new one in.. issues is you need to tighten it down enough that it seats before tightening on your rims...
Nate is right, but as they show in the picture you can use washers to help seat the stud back in place. http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/replace_rear_wheel_stud-t4247.html?t=4247
It probably would not hurt anything to drive it. Just make sure the other 4 lugnuts are tight. I personally would not drive a 06 sti on only 4 studs though... Not worth the risk imo
you could techincally drive it all day long and forever on 4 studs....i wouldn't worry about it. Just wouldn't drift it all day every day
I've replaced several studs over the years from shops overtightening the lug nuts. I just use a large nut that fits over the threads of the wheel stud and an open-ended lug nut to pull her home.
bingo.. yes they do sell a tool with a bearing built in so it spins with the nut as it tightens so as not to score the lug-nut... but you can do it with a washer or larger nut as a base...
and yes the freezing trick helps, the stud will be just a little bit smaller and will go in ever so much easier
I drove my wagon around town for a few weeks with only 3 studs on each rear hub....stupid XT6 studs being impossible to find.
to pop the rotor off the hub (they get corroded together). you may not need to do it if you've done rotors very recently - or you can beat on it with a hammer but I'd use the screws over that method
The WRX and STI has the E-Brake pads/assembly inside the rotor. You'll need to insert the two screws in the holes and thread them in, which in turn will push the rotor off the assembly. MAKE SURE YOUR E-BRAKE LEVER IS DOWN otherwise you'll have a long fight on your hands.
Lol i was really pissed when it snapped and my hand slambed on the garage floor Are the fronts easier to replace then the rears?
