So today I'm compiling some stuff to list my bugeye up for sale (photos, mod list, history, etc), and one of the things I checked was the production details from the site below: https://legacypic.uk/identification/vinSearch.php According to that, the "Grade" is listed as "WRX (Pre Production)." Out of curiosity I did find a VIN for another GD built in April of 2001 and it was just listed as "WRX." The ID tag on the car shows a build date of August 2000 (same month the bugeye was unveiled in Japan), and if I'm interpreting the VIN correctly this was the 29th WRX sedan built. The Carfax shows that it was auctioned as a "manufacturer vehicle" in March of 2002 with about 14k miles, which was the first instance of it being registered as a personal vehicle: Anyway, with all this info I'm now wondering if the car legitimately actually was a pre-production model that would've been used for testing, press, or what have you. Anyone ever come across something similar or have any input as to what all this really means?
So that's trying to say that your USDM MY02 or MY03 was actually built in 2000? That's wild. I've got 5 bugeye WRX's on the property currently so I'm curious to run VIN numbers and see what it comes up with.
Yes it was, very early run. I'm curious what yours pull up too. The only ones I've been able to find that were built earlier than that were for other markets and in different configurations.
So after doing some digging on that Subaru production info site it looks like there were 75 pre-production WRX sedans built between 4/24/2000 and 10/24/2000 for the US, UK, Australian, and Canadian markets. 35 of those were for the US, 34 of which were 5MT and 23 of those were blue. Retail models started rolling off the line 1/10/2001. I know this is getting into Corvette owner at a car show territory saying it was one of only this many built on that day in that color with these options blah blah, but I find it really cool. No idea how this would impact value or collectability (especially considering it's been modified) but it is pretty interesting.
Lol gladly, I did just say earlier that I'm trying to get my crap together and list it for sale. Wrote up a thread for it a couple years ago (link below) and other than this bit of history nothing has really changed except the mileage, which at this moment is 88,460. https://mnsubaru.com/threads/bugeye-up-for-sale-be-warned-its-a-long-post.55036/
oooh... i'm going to have to plug in my bug-eye's VIN too... Knowing mine's a 2003 i wonder if it's production date will be closer to the 2003 model year
I will have to see if I can find the vin from my wrx. It was 1 of the 1st 4 to be delivered in MN and I took delivery of mine in Feb 01. Money was down and I was told it was being built in Sept of 00. Also wild, mine was blue with a automatic transmission. Was mine the oddball... To bad it got wrapped around a poll....
Not sure if the site is 100% accurate but it shows the only auto WRX sedan built in September was a silver pre-prod. Says the first blue one left the factory January 11h.
I wonder what the difference in option codes and trim codes is. All of my trim codes are the same, but yours is different than mine. And some of my option codes are different.
As far as I can tell the trim code is for the interior so I would think those are almost all going to be the same. Not having much luck finding anywhere that lists a description for each of the option codes though.
You know because your car was a "pre production model" it was most likely featured in their TV commercials back in the day. Nobody can probably prove it's not the exact one, so probably should throw that in the sale description as well. Haha.
Would this kind of thing work to figure out what number of the 500 production “series blue” models my BRZ is? I’ve always been curious.
This production info is super interesting but yes it is starting to smell like a Corvette forum over here...who is wearing the New Balance and Jorts?
