So I have pretty much everything lined up to buy a stock 05 sti with 76k on it for a smoking deal. I had it brought to a mechanic today and everything major checked out, but there are a few small things that need fixing. I am going to attach the report from the company that did the inspection. Anyone know how serious these issues are? The mechanics did not sound to concerned, but what do you guys think?
I would get another person to look at the alternator and oil pan gasket. Other than that, no big deal. Tell us about how much smoke was emitting from the deal! ~Dan
i agree, have someone else look at it....i have a hard time beleiving the oil pan gasket and the valve cover gasket need to be replaced...
If the deal is so "smokin" then why not just pick up an alternator on eBay and fix the oil pan yourself. There is no such thing as an "oil pan gasket" you just smear RTV on it and tighten it down. If the person inspecting your Subaru doesn't work on Subarus, then he'd likely see the messy RTV edges as possible failure. As far as I'm concerned, you're looking at maybe 150 dollars in "repairs." Alternators go bad, they just do. They are mechanical and they wont last forever. Replace it anyway. As far as the oil pan seal, seriously, do it next time you change your oil. Hardest part of the whole thing is taking the nuts off the engine mounts and using a floor jack to raise the engine up enough to get the back bolts out of it. Otherwise, this will add at most one hour to your next oil change. I would definitely NOT take it in for ANOTHER inspection, you're just pissing money away at that point. Have one of the knowledgeable people on this forum take a peek at it, but otherwise, I'd just fix those two "issues" and buy it.
cool. i was planning on fixing those things, i just wanted to make sure those issues would not lead to something more serious in the future.
