IDK - 4 cars a year? That seems like it wouldn't hold interest very long. I think monthly is the way to go (or 6 weeks). More winners, more contests, more options for everyone.
I think the biggest thing will be keeping up with fresh ideas. I think last time we did it, we had it rolling for over 2 years, the biggest challenge wasn't getting the cars, it was making the contest. You can only do best blue car (or whatever it is) so many times before people get bored with it. I am also ok if a couple of people want to make this work. Really, that might be the way to go. Everyone can bounce ideas off of each other. Might help keep the contests fresh and reduce the workload. Then each person can work a month and the other can plan for the next month, or something like that. Russ
I would be interested in doing it every other month. I think I could handle the thread setup and all that. I also don't think that there is a need to have a theme every time. Some could be themed and some could just be open entry. I think this would help keep interest up, and also stop it from becoming a "themed Subaru-related photo of the every other month" contest. Contest every other month 6 weeks for people to submit their entries 1 week for me to prep the poll 1 week for the poll to be open Every other contest will be themed or open Winner gets a quick photoshoot if they'd like Maybe other prizes if we get donations? Winners cannot enter again until next year? I don't know if all of those make sense or not. If anyone has other input, please let me know.
Themes could stay the same each year IE: Jan-Feb... Best winter beater **75% of mile must be put on durring winter months March- April... Best rally car (dirt) ** including rally cross May- June... Best daily driver ** 60% of total miles driven must be on this vehicle July-August... Best track car (tar) ** including auto cross Sep-Oct... Varries yearly...IE: Best WGN, Sedan, Legacy, Impreza, Forester, XT/ turbo vs NA ** open to any one that fits the "current" theme Nov-Dec... run off for the five winners thought the year ** no double poll with extended voting Just my thoughts if it was run bi-monthly ** Edit for more info
OK, I should be able to get the poll up more quickly than a week. I don't think we should need a 2 stage poll unless we have more than ~10 entries. Do you think we'll have that many? I also don't like the idea of such a short entry period. That seems like it would definitely limit the number of entries. The specific categories also seem very limited. Most people would really only be able to enter once a year, and would probably lose interest the rest of the year. I think that having more open entry contests would help keep participation up. I don't know. Maybe I'm way off base here. Or maybe I'm just in way over my head and we shouldn't even try this, lol.
Many members have more than one Subaru... Preaty sure with my POS, if there is no JAN-FEB/Winter beater theme I have no chance on winning... so you are leaving it up to members to list their cars without a theme... in that case we will be seeing the same old cars with the same old posts... Sure I can see 3wks to list, 2 wks for first poll, and 2 wks for final poll, and a week for the winner... without the second poll no matter what you do I think things will be drawn on for to long. *I also edited previous post to reflect more info
I am 100% with Ben.... I say leave it open. See how it goes. With the suggested categories I can maybe enter once.... sweet. I can use the thread once a year. I see myself (and others) loosing interest in that very fast. We have tried the "theme" thing before, could it work now? Sure! ..... but, why not leave it open to everyone. Just because your car isn't the newest doesn't mean you can't win. For example the 3Gwrx COTM thread right now has someone winning who used a shadow of his car in the photo. So you really have no idea what the car looks like. Leaving this open allows people to be creative with their pictures. That is how you get the best entries.... allowing people to be artistic.
Sure use it once... list you POS and don't vote/ comment the other 5 times we have a poll... seems like a win to me Again leave it open... I copy and paste what I put up the last month, again and again and again untill I win... I foresee many members doing the same thing... sounds creative... something that is the same every other month(every time) plus I am sure you went to BIR and put that POS to the test on the tar (1), and it's a DD correct? (2), and depending on if we did a WGN or Impreza or Turbo theme for Sept-Oct (3), and if you won one of those you are in the final (4) So potentially 4 of 6... you are complaining about not being able to put the same sh*t up every other month... again
The simple solution that Ted came up with to deal with the the scenario you ladies are bitching about was to pick universal themes that are not specific to a type of car... Some example I remember are: pics of your subaru with your pets fall colors winter/snow photos aftermarket wheels your "other car" (non-subaru) etc... This way, even if the entrants/cars are the same, the photos are fresh... which makes a lot of sense when you realize that 99% of the subarus on the road look the same lol... the other 1% have some obnoxiously awful wheel color that no one wants to look at anyway
The idea is that you take the picture at the time of the contest. You don't use old pictures.... what fun is that? Why would you put the same thing up over and over again? If you didn't win the first time, why would you think that people would vote on it the 2nd time around (yeah I can use those too). Every Subi POTM contest I have seen they say that you need to take the picture for the contest. They don't call them Photo of The Month for a reason, you take it that month. Not "photo of the dusty shot that i took of my car that one time". I know I am going a little off the top here but your assumption above is retarded. I mean really, is that what you honestly think I am asking Ben to do. Ben please start a thread so I post 1 photo 12 times a year..... come on dude. The idea is to get outside, take a new photo and see if you can make it work for the month. No one cares about my old photos... that I am guessing are already posted on this website... well honestly no one really cares about my photos period.... but that's not the point. It is a contest. A contest to get out and take some photos not post that 1 photo 12 times. So why not leave it open. Maybe instead of a bunch of "I just washed my car" and "hella flush" photos we will get some cool entries. There are tons of people on this site who understand how to take a photo. I am sure you won't be disappointed. So lets be open minded on this, leave it open. A member (not mod) has offered to do something with the site. Let him run with it.

Big picture, it doesn't need to be this complicated. We can do a old pic month, we can do it so only a pic taken DURING the contest will be used, that is part of the "theme" that I am talking about. Also, Russ
why not instead of an actual "car of the month" where your picking a "blue car" or "best winter beater" do a themed photo or photo shoot each month involving your car... i.e. best parking lot shenanigans, best rainy day pic, best black and white shot, best night shot, best action shot... etc... have each person that wants to enter, upload a picture into said thread between the 1st and maybe 20th of the month and then have a moderator set up a poll for people to cast their vote during the last 10 days you can cap it to the first 5, 10, or 15 or whatever entrants. then maybe have said winner pick the next months photo/car of the month contest that will also keep ideas new and fresh since someone new is choosing the catagory or idea... Just my 2 cents
I don't really know that that matters, I just think it would help develop some more involvement in the forum. I go to other car/motorcycle forums and they'll have something like this. Yes, a lot of the cars/bikes look the same, but people still have fun with it.
Well, whoever wants to run with it, go for it. I really don't think anything special has to happen on the backend to make this happen. Whoever does it each month will need to create a new thread to collect photos and to post the poll, so there really shouldn't be any need to mod threads. If needed, I (or any of the other mods) can help cleanup a thread. So go for it, whoever wants to run with the ball. I have actually been in contact with Ben about this... We/I was thinking about more of a POTM poll 11/12 months and a story/car for the last month... We were actually working on the "rules" and format now... we were just starting to go over things... we can stop if others are apposed to this. Thanks, Dean
If there's a rule in there that the organizer(s) can't win then my vote is definitely for Lee and/or Dean. No one wants to see Lee's POS neon and Dean's ride resembles a rolling tetanus factory more than it does a car.
