I was checking something underneath my 09 WRX today and noticed some rust in the wheel well and also on the axle which looks pretty bad.

Car went through two winters (= snow + salt) and had only 9000 miles (my work is 4 miles away from home and I don't hang out much :)). So my question is if I should do anything to the rusted areas? If so what are the options? I guess one thing I already know is I should wash the car more frequently in the winter. Thanks for any advice.

thats surface rust on and axle, hub, lower control and the bolts are you wont find a car in this state with out it. its not body rust dont think about it. its not going to eat threw and of the parts on your car only rust to worrie about is body rust.

Thank you and I'll take your words and relax. I was helping my friend put winter tire/wheels today. Apparently all the metal pieces under his BMW 5 have some type of coating (silver color) and I didn't see any rust. I guess you get what you paid for. His car is newer though, and I'll know how it holds up after a couple winters.

The only suggestion I can give is wash your car regularly. It's not gonna stop rust, but it will help.

Yea, those pieces are solid, untreated steel. They will rust very quickly once they get wet, but not a cause for concern. If you wanted to, you could take everything apart, clean it up, and paint it with some POR15, and that would keep it protected from the elements and keep it looking new, but that would be soooo much work.

I do rust protection at work we hit most of the under side of the car not so much of the areas you have pics of. but will protect most of the control arms and inward. also helps with road noise

Also, I'm not a believer in stuff like that. I have seen SOOOO many rust preventive gimmicks on cars over the years, and never a sign that they have worked. My Celica ('92, now with 160k miles) has a "Zeibart rustproof" sticker in the window, and giant holes in the rockers. I'd place a sizeable bet that this car will be killed by rust

Thanks to everyone for your reply. It's already cold and I guess there's not much I can do at this point. I will wash the car reguarly through the winter and check it again in the spring.

Anyone here familiar with Ziebart? Wondering if it's worth the $450 they're asking right now. I would like to keep my car as long as possible.

I just signed up for an Unlimited Monthly Car Wash, maybe that's something to consider to help keep your car from rusting over the winter.

Like I said, my Celica was Zeibarted. It was done before the PO bought it, so more than 8 years ago. And the rockers are completely rusted out. I'd consider that a complete waste of money!

i worked for zeirbat now we are a z-teck it does help as long as you still do regular washes and get your annual check ups

The paint protection that we use is awsome. My car is diamond glossed paint protected and all i do to clean is rinse it off and all the dirt and grim comes right off.
