I need a decent (~$60) pair of door speakers for an 01 RS. I'm not a car audio guy...advice needed. Factory head unit still in place (for now) and deck speakers on the way out. thank you
The easiest route will be a set of 6.5" Coaxials. You could do Component speakers, I believe, but that takes some work to install and most likely an amp. I'd reccommend somewith with high sensitivity and low RMS wattage. The factory desk is most likely only 10ish Watts RMS, most aftermarket head units will be 15-20RMS. Also, consider that your doors are shallow, especially once you consider the window when rolled down cuts that space in half. My suggestion would be these: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_31099_Pioneer-TS-A1674R.html Good name brand, shallow mount depth, high sensitivity, good RMS rating for your stock/aftermarket head unit, and the price is right.
Honestly, I'd install a head unit and see if you still feel you need new door speakers. Most OEM speakers are capable of much more then OEM head units. A good aftermarket head unit will be able to get that performance out of them, (beyond volume it will control the speaker more effectively). Also you will get very very poor results from aftermarket speakers with an OEM head unit, making the head unit upgrade more essential (If I was getting a full set of aftermarket speakers I would probably go up to a stand alone amp personally) I've literally got a trained ear and a head unit is more then enough to please me as far as car audio goes. Well that and a Sub woofer, but that goes beyond the OEM speaker locations and so on.
Subaru oem speakers are not bad at all as long as you don't blast your music really loud. At very high volumes I found them to start distorting a lot but that's to be exspected for oem
With OEM speakers i just set the volume offset (a common option on aftermarket headunits) down as low as it will go (often minus 8), less likely to over crank em then. I wouldn't worry too much about blowing your speakers though, your more likely to blow speakers on a underpowered amp then an overpowered one (unless your retarded and wanna run max gain on your amp at ALL TIMES FOREVER)
