So I noticed this about a week ago when it was wet outside and it has happened about two or three more times since then...

Lets start by saying 03 wrx 4 eat automatic, stock minus a subwoofer in the trunk

I get in the car and turn the key, the car will crank but doesn't turn over. So I turn the key back to the off position and on the second turn it catches and turns over after a little more holding.... however it is a very week start
-side note is that it has not have had this problem when I use the remote start as I am walking toward the car, but then again it has not happened a whole lot.

I did just replace the battery,
Anyway does anyone have any ideas? I have a warranty on the car which might fix this but if not I will just contact one of the guys on the forum.

Also I have noticed that my transmission upon initial start seems to idle at around 1500 rpm until the car warms up, than it will go to about 6-800 rpms...

    Thanks you guys

    -Long

a little more info please. sorry, but I think of "crank" and "turn over" as interchageable. They both mean the starter is engaging flywheel and rotating the crank. Is not firing until you crank it the second time? or is it the starter not engaging on the first try? If it is not firing, then my first guess would be fuel pressure(clogged filter, bad pump, etc.)

You mentioned remote starter. GET RID OF IT. Your problem will go away.

And yes, it will idle high until the coolant reaches 150 degrees F. Perfectly normal.

my MY04 used to do that for what i thought was no apparent reason. Strange.

It would go months starting normally and then once in a great while it wouldn't start on the 1st attempt. 2nd attempt it would always fire right up.

It hasn't acted up in a year or so.

    GL to you!

Really, really doubt it. If it was a Chevy, for sure.

I've noticed that on my swap this last fall when it got cold. However it'd only do it once in a while. Never done it before. However now it'd start up just fine....until I tore it apart.

I replaced the timing belt tensioner and it still does it, I tried a cam sensor and it still does it.

IMO its you hitting the key too fast, turn the key ON, let the fuel pump prime, then crank it over, thats exactly what your remote start does.....

Our 03 4eat has the same issue...without the remote start I was about to post, but will just pile on. 90k miles, all scheduled maintenance up to date. I was beginning to think fuel pump as well. I will do what AWDimprezaL suggests as a first step.

Was having a lot of trouble with this on my 02 wrx 5mt this winter. Changed the fuel filter and have run a couple Subaru Injector Cleaners through it in the last 3 months and it hardly ever does it anymore. Went from almost every time - and sometimes having to feather the accelerator - to maybe doing it 2 or 3 times in the last 2 months.

Those are all super cheap fixes with the MNSOC price from Tonka. Fuel filter took like 5-10 minutes having never done it before. I let it sit overnight before changing and it was easy as anything.
