ok well im kinda freaking out a little my friend just said he blew his motor on his 02 a few weeks back and heard a slight knocking noise in his motor but didnt go into great detail on what happened. but i was wondering if any of you ever heard the signs before **** breaks.. ok i have been hearing this kinda clicking, more of a chattering, kinda knocking sound, (sorry about the broad range just cant put my finger on the sound. but i can only hear this around the 3200 rpm range and does it in any gear. when im on the highway i can sit and get on the gas and hear when it starts acting up and when i get past that rpm range it goes away for the most part. its just kinda irritating, can u guys help me out.

    I've heard that sound...
Sounds like the bearings are going out slowly.
I know for a fact that the 2003 wrx here is doing that. Stopped driving it because of that sound.
The sti we just finished building did that before it's bearings went out.
Another swapped GC is making that sound right now.
The other guys who have rebuilt their blocks had that sound before it went out also.

i had that sound right at the exact rpm before mine went out. seems to resonate the best at 2800-3500 rpm. check your ac tentioner.

If you are getting close to time for an oil change, I would drop the oil and check for metal/metallic in your oil, or on the drain plug if you have a metallic one. Also check what the others have metion in this thread. I would also check for other random things that could be loose that could be making noise.

Have you tried revving the motor up while sitting still to see if it makes the same noise?

As for the tune/log. I don't know if we have anyone local that can do that. Tjamz might be able to. Not sure about it tho.

AJ I can possibly come lend you a set of ears on tuesday.

Give me a call on tuesday after you get off work. We will see what we can figure out.

When your car is doing this, is it warmed up? Also, how often do you check your oil?

when my motor spun a bearing in my 240 it started knocking only at cetain RPMS, and under load. As it got worse it started happening above X rpm, and then when free revving.

    Start saving for a 2.2T or a 2.5 STI block. :)

I don't think that would be the best option for someone who doesn't really race, abuse there wrx. a new 2.0L short block would be the cheapest, most reliable option. (if the car needs a motor)
