Hello all, I've been enjoying getting to explore the site. Seems like a great community! My car is an 02 Outback with the 2.5l, and here is my issue. On my way to work today, I saw the brake light come on. Went out briefly twice, but then stayed on. Brakes seemed to work fine. When I got to work, I noticed a clicking sound (Kind of like a relay switch) coming from under the dash - passenger side I think - every time I applied the brakes. Anyone know what this might be?
It is an auto. I went out to check it again, and you can only hear it while in park. Driving down the road, you hear nothing. I'm thinking it's some kind of brake/park safety relay of some kind? And now the brake light went out again. Darn those random issues!
There's a safety relay that only allows the car to come out of park when the brake is applied. As for the light, did you check your brake fluid level yet?
The level is just under halfway between the min and max line. So, it's not totally topped off, but well above the min line.
Could be something totally different, but my truck started doing this when I would brake harder than normal and I found out it was from my 3rd brake light being out. Same area it was clicking from the passenger side..just a thought.
Its the shift lock solenoid disengaging when the brake pedal is pressed. It might be loud, but its properly functioning. The brake light is likely low enough fluid to slosh around.
