so i was adding power steering fluid to my 97 impreza sport today, and while i was under the hood i noticed that my clutch fork seemed loose. obviously the forck is supose to move streight back, but it has side to side play. and beings ive never replaced a clutch on a suby i dont really know just how it sits in there. is this something i need to be concernd about? or is it normal for it to move side to side?
What kind of clutch fork, and how are you sure it is bad? Push-type? Pull-type? A push-type fork that rides on a ball has a some play as is. I can wiggle the hell out of mine, and it works fine. I was in there 20k ago, and it wasn't my first rodeo.
i believe it is a pull type, when you push the clutch in the cable pulls the lever back (fork). it doesnt really feel like its going anywhere or going to fall out. but im not familier with suby clutches, it just has side to side play. also the boot is cracked. but i dont believe its harming anything.
If a cable pulls the fork back, it's a push-type clutch. A pull-type pushes the fork forward. Do some reading, or buy a Haynes manual. I can take some video tomorrow if necessary.
I took some video of the cable fork on my beater wagon. This fork only has 40k on it, so keep that in mind. I've rocked these with over 200k without issue. Anyways, they have some wiggle as is. It is unavoidable with a fork that rides on a ball and it held to the release bearing with two wire spring clips. There is going to be some play no matter what.
