Just put an exedy stage 4 clutch in my wrx and now when it is cold it is really hard to get into gear and shift. Does anybody know what could cause this.

Sounds like the clutch Isn't fully disengaging. Does it grind at all when you can get it to go in gear? Also check the fluid level if you lost/changed it during the service.

lightly press the pedal you should have 1" of play before you start to feel the clutch pushing back.

Yeah it will grind once in a while. Its only happening when it's cold. When it's warm outside it shifts like a dream.

It has about an inch of play until it pushes back

So when it is cold it will easily go into the evens no problem but not the odds? Do you have a short throw? Anything else change when you did the clutch?

Yeah I have a short throw in the car. It is harder than usual to shift into all gears but 1,3,5 are the hardest ones

Ok in 1st how far off the floor do you have to come up before it starts biting? It still sounds like the master is out of adjustment to me. If you have to have it all the way on the floor for it to not grab I would spin the clutch master rod adjuster at the pedal assembly out one half to one turn and see how it feels.

Again did any other gearbox related changes occur during the clutch install?

No other changes occured. I set that screw back about three quarters of a turn and it seemed to help. I will wait until it gets cold again to know for sure. It is smoothly shifting into all gears now. Thank you for the help

If the shifter was taken off when doing a clutch, make sure it was put back in correctly. If it was clocked 180° it'll make it hard to put it in some gears. If it was a short shifter or an adjustable one make sure your linkage has clearance at the tranny tunnel. The upper linkage being too high up will make the arm not clear the passage way and it will prevent shifting into gears 1-3-5. Also make sure the shifter is IN the socket.
