So I got my clutch today and i almost busted a NUT. But any way I was reading the TECH Info and it states that the retaining clipon the inner end of the Rear axle shaft may have come off. So.....The axle shaft can move outward slightly to disengange from the side gear of the rear differential but, the whell bearing retainer assembly will not allow the axle to come out completely. WTF does this mean and is this some thing thats not to difficult to examine???
umm. They're saying that a retaining clip may be the reason for clutch slippage. not the clitch its self.
The retaining Clip The clip is supposed to hold the axle shaft in place, so if you try to accelerate too quickly it just races the motor. Kinda like clutch slippage.
Ok then....why post here? Go check it out and then if the clip is still in place, bust another nut lol
I means, if one of your rear axles have popped out of the rear diff, your RPMS will jump up like a slipping clutch. The center diff will try to hold the rear from spinning more than the front because the center diff is a VLSD unit. I've had this happen to me before but it wasn't as bad because I had a rear VLSD unit as well. If you have an open rear, you'll notice the slippage more. When my STi rear axle BROKE at the CV joint, I wasn't able to move anywhere because the center diff is an open unit but rear biased; DCCD tranny. The rear diff is a 2way clutch LSD but to make it lock up, you need to have torque applied to it and to have torque applied to it you have to have some traction to begin with so you clutch packs can get pushed together by the pressure rings.
Its called a spring pin. Unless someone used the wrong one it shouldn't come out, even if it was re-used. Like you said, it still will not come off the differential axle stub (a splined shaft, not a gear), even if the spring fell out. To get the axle out you have to take the large lateral link bolt out of the knuckle to give you enough room to slide the axle off the stub. Its not going to come off unless your CV joint is munched. Get under the car (this requires a jack and a pair of stands, which I hope you have) and pull on the axle by the diff. If it slide around on the stub, then yes, you lost the spring pin. I seriously doubt it, but anything can happen. Just curious, where did you get this car and who did the swap?
OK so I find out MORE that you have an older model IMPREZA w/ an EJ22T swap? Is this driveline swap an EJ22T 5spd PULL-TYPE tranny as well or is it just your factory 5spd Impreza tranny???? This would help a lot of what kind of rear diff it has. The old school Legacys had FEMALE rear axles. The Imprezas all had MALE rear axles.
Wow. i really dont know. But, I just jacked up my car and rotated the back tires they go the opposite ways. If that didn't help The guy I bought it from said it was a full swap motor and all. How do I tell which one is which? Thanks FUJi
Answers I dont know who did the swap. I bought the car like this (bad Idea ?) The guy I bought it from told me a polish guy who used to race subarus worked on the swap in indiana or ssomthing. But anyway could you explain to me again what exactly I am supposed to do ?
Its not a surprise that the rear diff is open since the VLSD was only offered in '91 and was somewhat limited as well. If you took some pics of what is going on that would help a ton, since diagnosing these kind of things is difficult over the internet. One thing you can do is get under the rear end and and pull on the inner ends of the axles. If they slide around on the differential ale stubs then yes, you lost a spring pin. If if you did loose a spring pin you need to stop driving the car until you fix it, otherwise you will fry the center differential real quick.
I dont think its a VLSD I jacked it up today and spun a tire. The tires went in opposite directions.
Grab the actual axle and see if it slides away from the diff. If they move back and forth on the axle stub coming from the diff then you lost the spring pin. Rear spring pins cost about $2 apiece. They're kind of a pain to get off and on if they are not PERFECTLY straight. Get new ones and pound them in through the chamfered hole. (The chamfered hole is the one on the axle that has a little divot around the hole for the spring pin. The hole on the other side doesn't have the divot. You'll need a 5.5mm or 6mm punch to do it properly. Your tires will spin in the opposite direction without load on the wheels even if the spring pin is missing. Oh, and the tires are supposed to spin in the opposite direction.
The tires ARE supposed to go in opposite directions ? If they are going in opposite direction doesn't that mean its a non LSD ??? Thanks for the detailed directions or should I say retards directions. I shall follow them.
Here you are TIM http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o422/unifiedself/004.jpg crappy pic. Did you want a pic of the Turbo it's self or the engine??
Do you know if you have the Legacy or Impreza rear end? As Fuji mentioned the Legacy rear axles are female with stubs off the diff. These would have the discussed spring/roll pin driven through the axle. If you have an impreza rear diff your axles will have a male stub that is inserted into the diff. The end of the shaft has a slot for a clip that is inside the diff instead of a spring/roll pin. Check out these pics: http://oksubaru.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=9104 http://oksubaru.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=9110 The new axles are 06 WRX axles with the male stub. The rusty ones are the legacy female axles. You can see the spring/roll pin hole on the bottom right axle. Either way there is no way for the axle to slide out enough to disengage the splines without pulling the upright or latlink bolt. Are you sure it isnt an issue with the clutch?
its the clutch, It has to be. I was just triple checking cause my Dad tends to threaten me with the idea that the clutch is not the problem. I began reading this warning paper that came with the Clutch kit I recently purchased. It suggested something about, IF the axle shaft pin was missing the effects could be similar to a slipping clutch. I'm am a paranoid freak about the car. Any one of my friends can testify. I am also sure you all love your subies too.
Do you have a Cable or Hydraulic clutch? Where in the pedal stroke does the clutch begin to engage/disengage?
You just need someone who knows what they're doing to come over and drive the car and they'll know wassup. Rear diff regardless if it's LSD or NOT will spin oppisite directions IF IT IS IN GEAR or IF the FRONT IS ON THE GROUND and out of gear. It's designed to be able to do that. It'll just be harder to spin them. They will spin the same way if it's out of gear. but lets not get into the mechanical stuff yet. Simply if you're on the hiway at about 60mph amd floor it in 5th and the RPMs shoot up, the clutch is most likely the problem. You should still be able to drive the car with the lower gears no problem UNTIL yoru clutch gets REALLY worn out and then it will start to slip in 4th and go down from there to where you DON'T have a clutch anymore.
I have a pull Type The clutch is all the way at the very end of the clutch. As in My foot must lift all the way off the pedal to be fully enganged. Does any else have or know anything about the clutch less igition system. I mean, does anyone start their Manual Tranny with out pushing down on the clutch ?? Cus I dont have to depress my clutch to start the car.
Yep thats exaclty It. I am at 70 MPH in 5th and my engine just races. The other day I tried to turn on a hill from a stop. SHe just kept rev up an barely moving. I seriously need to find a RELIABLE shop to put in my clutch. Thanks again FUJI
Wait so you havent put in the new clutch you have yet? The need to have the clutch in to start it is dictated by the ignition clutch switch. It is a switch connected to the clutch pedal that will close when you press the pedal. If you want to start the car without having to press the clutch you would just short the connector to that switch. In some cases if you dont have a separate switch for the cruise control it will make it not functional. It sounds like in your case the wire is jumpered to not need the switch.
just bring it to fuji's garage....fuji will fix it and i will be there to watch....i think its your clutch thats all gone...the disc must be no more disc
Word. Getting done for the LOW !!!! I wonder how much it would cost to slap a turbo and inter cooler on there.
isn't it a 22t swap? from the picture...it sure does look like it...if you want..i have a wrx intercooler for sale...i think its still at fuji's....and when you are ready to do the clutch job...just bring 50 bucks to me for the intercooler....better than no intercooler...
IDK I have heard the cold air intake is better unless I'm pushing over ten pounds of boost. This would me I need tubes and a thing for the fuel cut and a boost controller thing too. Sorry illiterate right now buzzed from burrr. Can that STOCK turbo push more even boost ????
If its a bone stock 22T then start with an intercooler and a turboback. You can make a fuel cut defender for about $2 in radioshack parts. The VF11 doesn't like more than 13psi anyways, so don't bother going much above that. Also, the stock 370cc injectors run out of room really early. In case you haven't started to get my drift, you can't really just slap a turbo on it. Many things should be looked at and possibly upgraded. Then there is tuning, yadda yadda yadda. Search is your friend. The BBS has a lot of answers for you as well.
they all depend....i have some 480cc injectors if you want them....add that with the intercooler soo....120 should do....if you want...they are just sitting around...waiting for someone to buy them...
Keep in mind you cant just slap in new injectors... As Dan said, get yourself an intercooler and exhaust system first. Then maybe a TD04 if you can handle the 90* inlet mod. All of this is coverd 10x over on legacycentral.

Sorry man, I honestly would have bought them. But I think some one stole my money. I had cash saved up some where and its gone. I live two mother f cks that both would need this cash. I really really would have bought them and the intercooler. If it was still there. Now I am so screwed over cus I can't fix my clutch, cus I got no money, i cant buy shyt cus I got no money. f f f f f f f f f f f f f f f f f is what I've been saying all day. Looking for the money.
