I am new to Subaru but I did have my Focus cobb tuned, Just wondering if anybody is able to do this yet and maybe more about this regarding subaru's. My car is my DD but I want some torque...and some fun. I have seen a bunch of threads on tuning but nothing specific to this. Any help would be awesome

I want to say that Uncle Scotty on NASIOC and maybe DirtyImpreza.com has an Outback Sport that he has modded. I could be wrong about it being Uncle Scotty, but even so there are some OBS's that have had power mods that make them pretty impressive. You'll probably just have to dig around a bit looking for NA (naturally aspirated) power mods on several different forums. There should be folks here with good advice, too. Also, a lot of info will stay the same between NA and Turbo models.

First, of course, should be suspension and tires. This will go a long, long way. Check out this thread here on MnSubaru:

    http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17723

A good general starter for modding is on NASIOC.

    http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533787

But Readymixx's advice in his mods thread in our Tech, Tips, Etc Forum is bang on: Research multiple sources, know what you are trying to do, know how to do it, research and review some more. (My summary.) A lot of modding follows a different path for a Subaru than for other makes of cars. So look at lots of sources and figure out if their goals are the same as your goals.

Scoobymods.com is also a great resource I shoulda mentioned above.

And finally, get tuned! Maybe this will give you all you want for starters. Bullwinkle is who you need to talk to about this.

    Good luck and have fun!

Bullwinkle does not tune N/as from what Ive gathered, nor does anyone offer tuning software yet for the 09 2.5i (I think)

This is a real question on my part: power in terms of what exactly? performance, say street performance? launches? top end? what about torque?

I don't think he is looking to track or race (maybe he is), but a torquey car is a lot of fun for a DD, tight twisties, etc.

I didn't know that Bullwinkle was only tuning turbo cars, good info. But still he (or some of the others of you) might have some applicable tuning info.

my general thoughts are your price to performance ratio is terrible for n/a. i'd invest your money in stuff that will make a very noticeable difference - mainly being tires, suspension, and brakes.

for the amount that it takes to buy your basic headers, intake and catback what do you get out of it? a louder car that you continually have to convince yourself is actually faster in any significant way. put that money into some decent tires and a set of good springs/struts and you'll have a car that's fun to drive. my 2cents

edit, not sure how significant tuning impacts these engines. maybe you can get some decent gains out of it but my stance is still to put money towards the handling side first

believe me, you can have a very fun car without significant hp and tq!

Power is a function of torque, which small displacement n/a engines don't have.

Like hotcarl said, if you are looking to make your car more fun, spend your loot on handling and braking mods. Power mods on the n/a are a waste of time and money -- i/h/e will cost you over a grand and you'll be lucky to net 5whp.

I've done one N/A car. It was....interesting. I'm still willing to tune an N/A, but I typically argue most people that ask out of it, as the gains are, as people have said in this thread, virtually negligible. Your absolute best bet for power out of a tune on an otherwise stock car is around 5-8 WTQ and 3-5 WHP. In addition, these small gains are somewhat hard to measure when doing road tuning, simply due to differences in multiple pulls.

I have not seen an 09 2.5i ROM, but my guess is that it would be a canbus ROM, so anyone with a open-port 2.0 should be able to tune one. However, I do not believe there are open-source definitions out yet for the car, so you'd have to wait for that. RomRaider's supported ECU list is here.

I agree with most of the guys here, you're better off putting your money in to some suspension or aesthetic mods.

I feel i keep getting kicked in the pants for not buying the wrx....I appreciate the help and advice, I have been known to have the ricer disease in the past . Like I said it is my dd, but would like some more power nothing crazy just for a little stoplight to stoplight fun or a cruise up the twisty bluffs down here. My cobb stage 1 suspension is on its way in, tires I have not picked up yet. I was thinking the bridgestones that use to come on the SRT-4. ( not good with tire models). and then put blizzaks on my steelies for winter..if anybody has a better suggestions Im all ears. Also I posted a thread before maybe some will answer...would the sti stock springs make a diff to my car with the cobb stage 1 sway bars?
