so i am wondering your guys opinions on my coilover purchase.. i can buy bc br racing coils for around 1000$ which is a decent for the money coilover option, or i can find a used set of say st, kw, or other name brand coils, now my question is, is it worth it to buy a used set of better brand coils vs a brand new set of bc racing coils?
Why do you want coilovers? What are you going to be using the car for? Are you going to be driving the car year around? Just trying to get some info so others that know far more than me about coilovers can help you out.
oh yes sorry, i will be daily driving it, but do not mind a more harsh ride. i plan to auto-x/road coarse the car a few or more times a year. and yes the car will be driven year round, but i will also be taking very good care of the coils over winter time, such as making sure the threads are clean, and i have also thought about making a sleeve of fabric to seal the whole coil, such as like what are on the front shocks of some snowmobiles. thanks for the help!
You're better off getting a good spring/shock combo with upgraded sway bars. They are better attenuated for your car and they will last a lot longer.
the one downside to a spring strut combo is i want to be able to adjust my ride height. i have looked into kyb and tokico shocks, but spring wise i am not quite sure because some are not enough drop for what i want, and the spring rates are a tad bit off for what i am wanting.
well to an extent, like i said i had looked at a few strut/spring setups and couldnt quite choose exactly what i wanted for a ride height as i cant quite know exactly how far down i can go and with the adjustments of coilovers it would be much easier. with that said i have thought about d specs with rce yellows or a spring with a drop of around 1-1.5 inch drop. also i would need camber adjustment plates. my concern is, why spend so much on just a spring strut setup when i can also spend some on a coilover setup thati can adjust as well as control dampening and when maintained, and properly set up will also last a while.
Dspecs and rce yellows are a stellar combo for gd chassis' The reason why these are worth the price is they were engineered for the specific chassis and they will last longer than almost all Cheap coilovers. Koni inserts are also a good option.
well st and kw arent the cheap coilovers, the bc racing ones i have heard good things about, i mean dont get me wrong, it isnt an ast setup by any means but they do the job and are quality parts, unlike raceland or those other ebay type. thanks for the info curry. i am going to be running +35 9.5 inch wheels and want to make sure everything is going to fit alright while still having a lower center of gravity/less wheel gap. i will look more into the dspec/rceyellow package.
With a 9.5 inch wheel you'll be tucking a 265 or larger tire, you probably aren't going to want to be slammed like that. You'd probably be best off with a good strut/spring combo, a fender roll to make room for the tires you'll be running on those wheels. You really wont have to worry much about wheel gap with a 9.5" wide wheel with 265 tires, that's alot of meat filling that wheel well
well the rims have a 225/40r18 tire on it now, (which is not from me) i was planning to go with a 255 tire, and the fenders would be rolled, and im not going for slammed at all. i am not a fan of the slammed on the ground look at all, i am all for a functional lowered car though. i plan to have somewhere around 1 inch or less of wheel gap all around, and want a level car. hense the adjustment liking of coilovers. i will have the fenders rolled as well to help accommodate the larger and wider tires/wheels. if there is a spring/strut combo that will bring the car to around 13.5-14 ride height i would like it, but i am having trouble finding a setup that will lower the car equally on all four corners.
How are you liking them? I haven't heard of them and they look to be pretty inexpensive. And just to clean up (what I personally believe) is misinformation in this thread...coilovers are a great option for these reasons exactly (functionally lowered/even ride height). It is very difficult to find an lowering spring for the GD chassis with an even ride height (some will argue that "proper" suspension dynamics on the GD will have the rear slightly lower, which is true...but probably only a .5" difference max). Instead of constantly being annoyed at the state of the un-adjustable strut/spring, coilovers allow you to do much more. A good strut/spring combo can cost well over $1,000, and if you want more adjustability besides just compression adjustment, and plan to use the car for autox or road course, strut/springs are not for you. GOOD coilovers offer more adjustability and much better handling (assuming your driving skills are up to snuff) and can be found used for around $2,000. RCE T2's (revalved KW V3's), KW V3's, AST, and some others are all great coilover options that can be had in the low two grand range and are far superior to a strut/spring combo from a handling and adjustability aspect. Good coilovers also offer a decent ride for DD. You can also set your ride height pretty even to boot! (I think 13.5" to 14" fender gap in the front and 14" to 14.5" fender gap in the rear offers the best strut travel and suspension dynamics). And BTW, if ride height is a primary requirement, coilovers are exactly what you need. Ya can't adjust ride height with a strut/spring combo. Sure, slamming it on cheap coilovers isn't the most comfortable and won't handle very well, but that's just what some people are in to (not me)
I ran D2 coilovers on one of my hatches and had no complaints about them at all. They do ride a bit stuff but it don't bother me. Mine were 10k springs front and rear.
well st coilovers are the same as kw just without the stainless steel assembly. mine are zinc coated. and i love them. they ride nice but also are stiff enough to have great performance. the dampening isnt adjustable but i feel that the engineers who designed them have the knowledge to set the dampening at the correct specs. but overall yes i am very happy with them.
