I'm trying to install a block heater in my 03 wrx. big problem is that my car is 9 years old and does not want to let go of the plug. I have used a 14mm allan and i have now rounded out the inside of the plug. so now im pissed and i need someones help. i have two ideas on how to get the plug out. either i use cold weld (jb-weld) and a big nut (HA!) and wait till tomorrow and try to get it out that way or see if someone here can weld a big nut onto the plug. my only concerns is that jb weld wont hold and i would waste a day waiting for it to cure. any thoughts? someone good at welding in a tight area?

its not a bolt its a 14mm hex flushed to the core plug. the plug is flushed to the engine.

Is there enough room to drill into the bolt to get an easy out bit in there? ?

There is no fun way to do these when they don't want to come out.

Short of welding a large nut over the spot for the 14mm allem I have had success twice with A LOT of heat and these.

These screw their way in until they bottom out in the hole. Work good on allen head bolts... The drawback is all their force goes to the sides, putting pressure into the thread you are trying to free. They either work great or make a problem worse, the trick is knowing when to stop.

I tried jb with a large nut and the nut just busted off. I'm thinking I'm going to take it in and have them weld a nut on and take it out that way. Is there anyone that help out that way?

well looks like this winter my car will be outside. I got the kit next to nothing so i thought what the hell I'll put it in. I finally got the plug out thanks to phobia. A+ for a awesome welder.

It's a night and day difference having one during start ups when you HAVE to park outside! Fobs knows his stuff when it involves welding...and lighting farts.

I park outside, and have for the last 8 years, never once have my subarus not started, or even had any trouble starting. Just sayin.

But your Subaru is a freak of nature my friend!

It will take a fraction of warm up time. Mine used to start up sluggishly when it was real cold (under 10 or 20 degrees) and especially if the wind was howling(below 0 degrees). With the heater core, never had an issue...fired right up and was warm in no time. I wouldn't say it's "needed", but it does help.

i know its probably not need. but i paid next to nothing. the most expensive part was the captain for phobia. everything else was pocket change. just makes me happy to know my car will start up and not be a slug every morning.
