Hey guys. The outer driver side cvj boot is torn on my 98 outback. When I turn, that wheel makes a grinding noise, not a clicking noise. I'm assuming my cv joint is going out because the boot is ripped and I drove through some pretty deep water, but I thought bad cv joints click, not grind. Is this a bad cv joint? Also, how bad of an idea is it to drive from say, Madison to Menomonie (~206mi) so I can fix it at a home with a garage?

You would probably be ok driving to the garage. Hard to say, depends on how long it has been bad.

so its probably the bearing thats grinding and not the cv? should i replace the bearing and the cv? would it be better to just do the whole axle?

I had to replace my entire hub assembly cause I drove on a bad wheel bearing for so long. Get it fixed, whatever it is, or pay the price.
