Greetings, I’ve been contemplating a dash cam (2018 WRX) Do you have one? If so, I would be interested on your thoughts regarding: What brand Front only or front and rear Installation effort Is it worth it Thanks!
Yes front only. If I did it again I would get front and rear. Installation was easy its suction cup mount. Worth it. Well haven't been in an accident no. But have recorded myself being cut off about x10000 times.
Hey thanks! A couple of questions: What brand/model Did you hard wire it or are you just plugging it in?
Mine has a usb connection that supplies power. Its routed to the glove box power port in my BRZ. https://www.amazon.com/Z-EDGE-Dashboard-Recorder-Ambarella-Recording/dp/B07DWY7F9L
ditto what JJ said. But I never used mine so gave it to my parents. Next one will be front and rear. Might hardwire it this time though. Super easy on most cars with the dome light in it's own housing right there to tap off of.
I have the Yi brand. Bought on amazon. It uses a sticker mount on the windshield and I put it behind the rear view mirror so I don't see the camera when driving. It is usb powered though the glove box port like Jason and I ran the wire under the headliner and behind the passenger A pillar so no exposed wires. It has wifi and an app so if something worth saving happens you can download it straight to your phone without having to unplug anything or remove the memory card.
Slightly OT, but how's the quality of the Yi hardware and the UI for their app? Looking at one of their action cameras.
I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Rexing-Gener...pID=41cvALwtQnL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch Front and rear. Easy to install and the flat mount keeps it relatively discreet when tucked up in the black frit area of the windshield. It was totally worth it when someone nailed me on the passenger side while trying to make a sudden left turn from the middle lane while I was alongside in the left lane (3-lane one way road). I sent off the video to my insurance agent who then immediately was able to prove my innocence and the claims process went swiftly and smoothly afterwards. I have the same cam installed in my wife's car as well, and I usually wear a helmet cam when I'm biking in the city.
I have nothing to compare it to but I have been pleased. I got the camera for about $50 and it records 1080p and auto loops on the memory card. The app is simple to navigate and is easy to pull clips from. If you were downloading a lot of footage it would probably be pretty slow but it works fine for downloading 20 second clips.
Do you have a 20 second clip of you taking it in the rear in the BRZ? Or did you only have the “forward facing” camera at the time?
This is the one I have but it looks like there is a newer model out now. https://www.amazon.com/YI-YI-89006-...8&qid=1542390741&sr=1-10&keywords=yi+dash+cam
I have a ThinkWare Q50 I believe it is? It get's zero use because like an idiot, I didn't look in to the software that was needed, and it does not work with Mac OS, only PC. I'd be willing to part with it if you're interested. It has a great pic quality, just doesn't work with my devices.
momento m6 . Easy to install has front and rear Its kinda expensive though Worth it as it got a license plate of a guy who stole from home depot.
https://www.amazon.com/Falcon-Zero-F360-HD-Included/dp/B00E56WY18 Falcon Zero F360. Dual cameras that can both be rotated, night vision, audio recording. Fits over your rear-view mirror and has the bonus of making your rear-view mirror view much larger. Downside is that your sun visor won't go down all the way. Have been using it for over year as an Uber/Lyft driver with no major issues. Once in awhile you have to reformat the SD card, as it's constantly rewriting 8 hours of video.
