I think I lost that sample you gave me. I never got to do an abrasion test. I might be in for another set as my front driver flap has been worn through by the tire. Fastline is no more so I dont get any free replacement flaps.
These should fit the bill quite well. They are made for semi-trucks, so they should work perfectly. Each 24" x 30" piece is $15.00!!! The guy at the place said that I could probably get two "car size" flaps from one 20" x 30" piece, but I told him that I needed four to make sure I could cut them down to the right size. Here is the place, but wait to order any from there until I can review the stuff.
I do too. The set that I got should be here sometime early next week. I will post pics when I get them, but it might take me a couple of days to get them cut to the size and shape that I want. If any of you want to meet up and see this stuff, let me know. I can probably also send a couple chunks out after I get them cut down.
I'm getting some "caution wide turns" flaps hahaha seriously, It's time for new flaps - let me know what the new material is like ted
I'll definately let you guys know what's up, and after cutting them to size, I'll be happy to send a couple of you the scraps so you can check out the material. I'll also get some rolling shots of me on the highway and a couple launches on gravel. They should show up sometime this week.
Two words, guys.... JACK POT This stuff is PERFECT!!!! And I'm guessing that a guy can get two good sized flaps from one sheet... Blackberry for point of reference:
I got two of them cut and installed tonight. I need to re-design the rear one, and the front one looks close. I used a dremmel tool and a piece of steel for a straight edge and got a really nice, almost die cut looking edge. I'm EXTREMELY pleased with the material, I think that it's ideal. My yield on this first set wasn't the best, but you can get 2 or 3 good sized ones from one large sheet. I also need to fine tune the install hardware, but that can be done later. I just re-used the stuff that I had from the old set. Let me know if you have questions or anything. I'll bring a couple chunks to work with me tomorrow. Let me know if you want to see one. We can also probably work out a price if you want me to make a set for you as well. The OLD: THE NEW:
Any chance you could snap a pic of inside the fender well? Also, I don't currently have any mudflaps so could you measure rough overall dimensions? Thanks dude!
I'm not sure how much I would charge for a set, I have to get it a bit more dialed in yet with the design, stainless hardware and a stainless bracket. I would guess around $90-$100? $40.00 for the plastic and shipping, $30.00 for the stainless hardware, and a couple bucks for my time. Daveo, no sweat at all. I'll try to get that done tonight sometime, but things are a bit busy this week. I have them on the drivers side of the car only right now and the front one is WAY too long. I feel like a moron not thinking about suspension compression, so, with me in the car, it's about 3/8" from the road surface. With any kind of bump, or even when I turn, it scrapes which is annoying. I think I'll shorten it up about an inch and see what I think of that. The rear one I hoped to be a bit longer and wider. Even though I extended both, I would like them a bit more aggressive. I will have multiple adjustment points on them once I am done. They will be height as well as left-to-right adjustable.
I'd need to see some final pictures, but I may be interested in some black ones. I'm gonna get flaps for the winter...was just planning on getting RA ones, but would rather go local if they are similar.
Lookin good. This new material looks alot like the stuff my Fastline flaps were made from. What colors does it come in?
I guess I should disclose that I am still looking to do the DIY thing, so I guess I shouldn't make Gridlocked do my work for me as far as figuring out how to fit these suckers on. They look good dude...I think I'm going to order some of this stuff after work today.
you can maybe buy my stuff. I dunno yet, I may be mounting these outside the fenders instead of inside
I'm not fully committed to selling my nice brackets yet. I'll let you know when my new flaps are in what I'm thinking. I need to come up with a good way of running them outboard of the fenders first (without tearing holes in my fenders when I crash into snowbanks). I will know by the weekend (assuming flaps show up before then)
I'll take some pictures of the hardware hopefully tonight. Do It yourselfers - no sweat there! PM or call me if you have any questions. I'll take pics of the tools that I've been using that look like they work well. maybe even a video of a cut... I can probably get the hardware made too, that's what I have to check on with my buddy sparky. Or, I can get a sheet, trace the hardware, and cut out sets with a tinsnips or something... Trying to get out of here (work) I'll try to post more laters.
Carl, I just went through the BK drive through and have a good solution for that. I'll take pics tonight if time allows, but they're basically plastic, ribbed plugs that would tear out before the fender does. Like a not-so-easy quick-release. They're one-time users, though - which is why mine ripped out today. I'm glad it happened though, they were rubbing and making a ton of nosie. It was embarassing.
yea I have a whole bunch of those plastic push plugs. I'm planning on running mine just behind each wheel well using some type of metal L bracket to hold the flaps to the fender and under the body (or rear bumper and under the bumper in the back).
Mine make a ton of noise. It I turn hard the fronts rub on my tires, and the backs will touch the ground even with only a little bit of body roll. I like that they hit when I corner, but they kind of feel like a bump stop and that sucks. Have you guys had issues with dirt/mud/gravel going around you flaps? My car seems to almost get dirtier w/ flaps than w/o.
I have a possible contact for someone who does laser cutting, a guy I went to college with owns a metal fabrication company near Milwaukee. If we get 100% decided on what we want to get cut, I can contact him.
I looked into a water jet cutter and they have a $500 minimum. I also have access to a die cutter, but the tooling fee is pretty expensive. My idea was to get a steel template made and just go around that with the dremmel. I could get a set done in a couple minutes. Daveo, PMme your address and I'll send you a chunk that will show the edge from the dremmel cut.
I think we are talking about different things, do we need to get some bracketry made up or just the flaps?
you're right... I was talking about the plastic... Tonight I'm hanging out with my buddy who works at Discount Steel - he's one of my best friends. I am going to bring one of my "test" mudflaps as well as the brackets that I got from a vendor. I'm going to ask him a couple of things. 1. How much would it cost to get the brackets fabricated with his lazer or waterjet machine - and what a minimum order would need to be. 2. If he just got me some stainless sheets and I cut out the brackets, how much would the sheets cost. 3. When I get a mud flap design that I like, I'm going to have him make a steel template with the lazer or water jet machine that anyone on here can use free of charge to make their own if they want. This way, you can clamp the template to the plastic and zip around it with a dremmel for quick and easy fabricaiton. If this costs me, I'll just charge a small "rental" fee for the templates to help absorb the cost. I guess this isn't a question, but once he sees the template size and complexity, he'll be able to get me a cost for the steel template. Pics and measurements in a minute...
That sounds like a good plan. If he doesn't want to help out with brackets/templates, let me know and I can try to get ahold of my buddy.
will do. That stainless is so thin that a guy could pretty easily cut it with a hand tool. Trace it out with a marker and cut. Save a lot of overhead.
When do you think pics of the final product will be up? I was planning on getting some RA classics, but would like to see these first.
I'm not exactly sure. Basically all I need to do is shorten the front one and I should be really close. I may be able to have them "done" by Monday of next week, but I can't say for sure.
I like the overall look of it in the car but I am unsure on the push tab idea. does it have to be push tab Ted?
good looking design. Cutting out the large section that is inside the wheel well is a good idea. Mine were pretty much rectangles and well they rub on the tires in there and mud/salt gets stuck behind the flap which is no good.
No, it doesn't have to be - you could mount them any way you wanted. I liked the push-tab because it was permenant enough to hold it on, but not as strong as a bolt which would cause damage if something happened and it ripped out.
Update: I talked to my buddy last night, and he is going to make a steel template for the flap shape once I get a design that works. This way, I can clamp it to the plastic and just rip around it with the dremmel. When I asked him how much it would cost to get them lazer cut, his reply was "Not much, let's leave it at that." So, I'll do my best to get the design ironed out and get a cost on hardware this weekend - incase any of you guys need hardware too.
w00t, I love the progress that's happening here! I'd really like a set of these on my car in the relatively near future. Keep up the good work Gridlocked and let me/us know if there is anything you'd like help with.
