You guys want me to mail you a paper template of the one that I have designed - so you have something to work with?

I'm close. Very close. I'm going to run these for a couple of days and see how they do. When I make additional sets I will make a few final adjustments and I should be happy with the design.
For these I used stainless alan head bolts and stainless washers.

Here is what I learned tonight.

    1. I've been drilling a few holes that I don't need.
    2. I developed a final list for hardware
    3. I found a better way to mount the rear one so no additional holes have to be put into the car!
    4. I can make the rear one a bit wider and the front one a lot wider which will make a better flap but reduce the yield for the plastic.
    5. I realized I need to pay attention to the shiny and dull sides of the plastic when laying it out.

    Front:

    Rear:

You can see the make-shift PVC spacer that I used tonight which will help allow junk to drain out instead of getting trapped between the flap and the car:

I also put a 2nd set of holes for a lateral adjustment so they can stick out further or not as far from the car. This one shows it NOT all the way out. :wavey:

IKEA cutting boards shatter when hit with rocks. I'd reccomend something a little heavier. I used semi mud flaps. You can get basic black poly flaps at Allstate Peterbuilt Utility in S. ST. Paul for $8-$10. One 24 x 36 flap is more than enough for all for corners.

Agreed. Go to St. Paul if you're going black. There's a place that I use online because I don't have time to get to St. Paul EVER. They have a bunch of different colors.

If you're going THAT agro /\/\/\, I would get two semi size pieces. even the ones that I make, I have to scale down a little bit to get all four out of one.

Yeah, I'd want something that goes up the wheel well a little more. They really don't have to be so wide because of the flared fenders on the sedan, but they definitely look chunky.

HA! I just realized that I wrote that - what I MEANT was don't order them if you're in St. Paul and you want black mudflaps. GEEZE. hahah

It would be extremely easy to make a taller flap that went further up the fender. That's a simple design tweak, but you could only get two per car size flaps per sheet.

Once I get all of the little details and quirks ironed out, I'll probably make them by request. I would say that I'm 98.375 % of the way there.

I guess these are actually semi truck flaps that you can get for $18 at napa and they come in black and white. I checked them out today and they are about twice as thick as the rally armor ones (no bending), mmmm beefy!

Hey Ted, thanks again for the flaps, they are excellent. However, I have a question for you. My fronts (while using the bottom mounting holes) are only 3" from the ground while sporting the stock STI suspension. You think that is too low or will I be fine?

My rears are 3.5" from the ground.

3" is good. They might rub every once in a while and you'll hear it, but 3" is good. I'm assuming that the STi suspension is fairly close to the Prodrive springs and GR2's that I had in the bugeye.

Do you have pics with them on the car? What did you think about the install process/hardware?

I have to be honest Ted, I was really pissed at the installation process, and let me explain....

    1. I ran out of smokes before I could even start
    2. I could only maintain 68 degrees in my garage...brrrrr
    3. I had to install them myself

you did a great job fabing these. all the hardware worked perfect and the custom metal bracket for the front was real easy to make.

The only thing I noticed was the rears weren't completely straight when installed, but 2 seconds with the drill to make a new hole and they were dead on.

    These are super sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll get a picture up today at some point.

Yeah, When I made yours I had already given my template to Kalie and had to guess on that last rear hole which is probably why they didn't install straight. I also realized I had a bit of stacking error which started teeny and grew a bit with each set. I've ditched the old hole pattern and am using a sheetrock T-square for the latest version. And, I got some professional cut brackets from my buddy at Discount. Game on.

I still want to see those!

Might have to do some r&d on my FXT. Since the body is so different, I am not to sure if the templates you have will work.

ted, I'd like to look at your rear templates - the spacing on mine is incorrect and they always end up slightly skewed outwards.

I have new material sitting in my room, I might start on them tomorrow night

Want me to trace on on a piece of paper and send it to you? I don't have an Impreza to test fit them on anymore, so it will have to get someone to try this set and give me feedback.

Dave, do you remember which hole you had to re-drill?

As soon as I get the pattern down for the impreza, I plan on making a set for my 04 Forester, and then finishing up the GC pattern.

yea, I just need to see what the spacing for the inner most hole is. seems like mine are too close to the fender. I could figure it out easy enough but I'm lazy lol

Ted, I was looking at my GC today and in the front there really isn't a good way to mount flaps without drilling into the body somewhere. Did you have any ideas or what did you do about that. The rear would also have some funky angle but that's less of a deal.

No, unfortunately it requires throwing one self-tapping screw into the body per flap. One could try to install a set without it, but all of the designs I have seen warrant one little hole. I know it sucks, but I havn't figured out a way to avoid that yet. I've only been able to work with Holster's GC so far, and that was a while ago.

This is the v3 set on my old WRX. You can see the self-tapper on the left side of the pic.

    Here is the v4 cut.
I contacted the place that I buy the plastic today to see if I could get the sheets without the holes that the semi truck drivers use and I'm waiting to hear back. You wouldn't be able to see the hole very well if they were installed, but it still takes something away from the finished product.

No, unfortunately not - I looked into it this morning. The plastic starts out as a semi-truck flap and there must not be very many truckers into pink.
