So, based on my thread I started yesterday, I'm sure most of you noticed that while ordering a Kartboy short throw for my '07 wrx, Oakos sent me one for a 98-01. They have agreed to send me the right one and have me send the wrong one back.

Before I agree to this, I want to make sure I don't have the factory short throw kit (which would mean I need the 98-01 lever). How do I know if I have it? It's not on the original window sticker...but neither is the factory boost gauge that was in the car.

So...how can I distinguish the stock shift linkage between and the factory short throw kit?

I dunno...I'm at work. What color would it be if it were the factory short throw...and what color would it be if it were just stock?

In my experience, on the 5-speed 02-07 at least, the stockers have been greyish with a larger lower section and skinner upper threaded section. Factory short-throw is same diameter throughout and goldish in color.

Pop the shift boot surround off by pulling up on the back section and take a peek when you get a chance.

I don't think it was gold when I last had it popped off...but I wasn't really looking for it. I'll sneak out and check it out.

    Update: Definitely not gold

so then, I have the factory short shifter? mine is gold in color. I have a kartboy STS as well for the 06 5speed, if this is the case what gc8 is saying is that if you have the factory STS then you need to get the 98-01 STS kit?

    or am I way off?

Yes...the "barrel" that you bolt it onto the fork with is different lengths between the 98-01 and the 02-07...did yours fit in perfectly, or was it really loose or not fit at all?

So you havent installed it yet? I'm confused now

We could just swap shifters...no need for swapping bushings as they should be the same (and I didn't get any yet).

I still need to confirm that mine indeed is the 98-01 lever...all I'm going off of is the sticker that's on the bag it came in. Oakos gave me measurements of what the barrel should be for each one. Here's what they told me:

The way to tell if it is indeed the ’98-’01 shifter is to measure the width of the “barrel” . That is the horizontal round pivot point just below the yellow label. The ’98-’01 shifter will be 29mm wide and the 2002-2008 shifter will be 36.5mm wide in that area.

So, I'll measure mine when I get home and if it's the 29mm then I would be up for a trade. Just make sure yo uhave the 36.5mm one!
