E-85 conversion is it worth it?

    I am interested in one of those. People in the Facebook page have been saying they don't know who to get their car tuned by with it as some people can't tune with it. At least that's what I'm seeing from my understanding. I could be wrong

    If you're in college and can't afford to rebuild....you should go back to stock or leave it at stage 2. Lol

    Seriously though, there is, like Pete said, no magic reliability number. Your car could blow tomorrow the way that it is. Adding e-85 right now would only increase that possibility. Save cash while you are working your butt off through school and get a nice chunk of money saved up to play around with the car when you graduate!

    I mean I could afford it but I'd have to take out a loan to pay for school then and that's not worth it. I'll see if I can gather funds in the next couple years to be able to handle it if something were to fail. Thanks for the input.

    If you go new and let someone else do the work, a built 2.5L runs close to $6k. This can vary up and down greatly based on new/used, stock internals/aftermarket, you do the work/someone else does, etc etc.

    Enjoy it as it is and pay off school debt is my final answer Merideth.

    Nuke tuned my car and I couldn't be happier with it.

    Edit: At the time I also added a 3-port EBCS and an ACT HD clutch as well as 750cc injectors and DW300 fuel pump. You will also want a Golan SS fuel filter.

    My car made 300 AWHP and 330 Tq. on the dyno at RS Motors.

    OTOH, Nuke tuned my car and I grenaded a piston and ringland. Had him tune it again after the rebuild and it's been solid. I don't blame Nuke and I don't think it had much to do with the tune. It's just part of the risk you take when you start fiddling with forced induction. There is no 100% "safe" way to proceed here.

    Also... being able to pay for something isn't the same as being able to afford it. That's a world of nope you don't want to visit.

    Sounds like I'll hold off on E-85 for a couple years then and do suspension upgrades to handle the power and handle better at the track. Thought I'd ask about E-85 since everyone who has it recommends it and its a good bang for your buck mod. Coilovers it is though it sounds like.

    No you buy the e85 module and the tune using ecutek cable and software. The e85 module then adjusts your timing and what not based off the ethenol content in the gas. Ive been running it on my brz for a year or 2 now and has worked great. Do not have exp. with it on a boosted car though.

    Lots of good advice already. For what its worth I think E-85 is a much safer fuel on the stock block due to its resistance to knock. That isn't to say that your engine will not still blow up just that in my opinion E-85 is a safer fuel in our cars and their tendency to destroy pistons. I have been running 350 whp on E-85 (DB's Dyno) on the stock block for about 10k miles now with no issues. I just recently had the Cobb Flexfuel system installed and love it. I would recommend converting to E-85...however as has already been stated if you cannot afford to have it blow up you are better off staying stock or whatever level you are currently at.

    also planning on going with the cobb kit. once installed (feel comfortable doing on my own) can i drive with new/e85 parts for a bit before getting a final tune? was hoping to be able to use ap3 but cobb says i will still need protune which sucks because just recently had to have tune done. nothing like repeatin work

    heard back from cobb
    as long as the injectors aren't installed it's drivable
    nice having everything in one kit instead of shopping around for everything
    anyone know how booked up Nuke is?... plan on giving him a call!!

    I'm going with the Zeitronix kit this winter to run flex fuel. Everyone on the MNSubiez facebook page recommends DB for tuning. They have tuned with the Zeitronix kit before and it's about half the price as the cobb kit and does the job just as well. Give NF a call for tuning but I'm sure they slow down in the late fall and winter months.
